What is the best way to take out this broken pin without heat,im afraid of melting collar. All suggestions appreciated.

Although it will create some heat, reversible drill bits, when you drill in reverse it will also heat up quicker and usually unscrew fairly quick but there's no guarantee.

Mike i tried that but it is a brass 5-16x14 and i couldnt get enough heat.It has about 1/2 in white collar and black band so i cant apply heat with torch etc.Would a suitable fix be to drill it out, bore hole to 1/2 in,about all the space between collar, plug with maple or phenolic, retap, add new pin?

Are you sure you used a left handed drill. The other option is if you have a whole in there from a regular drill bit, use and easy out in that hole and then heat the end of the easy out, it will transfer the heat to the pin.

I've used a soldering iron with good results. It keeps the heat localized, on the screw...JER

tap tap tap.......;)

No Varney, I don't see how using a tap would work in his situation.... or even 3 different taps.... Possibly a drill bit to create a hole like Mike suggested....:D

:p j/k:p

I take and drill a hole in the pin and then I made a tip for my soldering iron that fits into that hole. Then just plug in the soldering iron and when it gets hot I put the pin in the hole and let it heat it up. Keep an eye on it and use a easy out to back the screw out.

Im going to the shop now,ill see how it goes, guy just phoned to see if its ready. What would be a fair price for this,if it was flat faced i usually charge $55.00 for a remove old and instal new pin.thanks

I normally charge 20 or 25.00 myself unless it is a radial pin then I charge more as the pin costs so much.

i'll throw my 2 cents in here too :D
i lock a pair of vise grips onto the pin and heat the visegrips directing the heat away from the finish
normally i use my old plumbers torch but i'm out of gas now
i had to improvise
i did one the other day by sticking the visegrips into the burner on kitchen gas stove
i wrapped a wet towel around cue just in case
took about 5 to 7 minutes for the heat to transfer enough to break it loose
another method i've used, is to run a center drill into the pin to generate enough heat
works pretty well also, providing the pin is centered

I screwed the easyout in,heated with a soldering iron, covered joint with wet rag, took 25 mins, finally turned out,my soldering gun is pretty small. Thanks for all good advice, dick maybe my price is too high, the customer told me last night the other guy in town told him$100.00.

turns out, your $55 was a bargain.
sounds like the other fella just didn't want to mess with it unless he could make a killing
