Broken Shaft

If he broke in some crazy way where it was likely he damaged it we'd be discussing him paying for it. But, if it just broke for seemingly no reason and it was just in his hands when it happened then I would have done the same as you. Not his fault in that case and probably would have happened eventually anyway.

Sucks though, sorry to hear that.

And when playing with someone I know who doesn't have a break cue I always offer to let them use mine if they want.
 
Sadly, if it broke in the joint area, he just ran it into the table. Saw this happen years ago with a Huebler Hustler that a friend of mine had. He was goofing around and the joint end of the shaft just exploded.
You could always again ask the person if his offer still stands to pay half. At this point, if he does not, your out nothing. Like a post says above, no need to loan your cues out. There is probably some one piece cues in the corner of the room. Good Luck
 
You gave permission, and immediately turn down his offer for compensation. Next time, thank your opponent for the offer, but give you a few days to think about. Don't make decisions in haste.
 
You borrow my lawnmower, chainsaw, digging fork, shovel and it breaks when you're using it, you will replace it with identical quality. My pool cues are like my tooth brush......don't touch it.

Personally, I don't let anyone shoot with my sticks. This is because I loaned a stick a few years ago to a player that is pretty good. He would get ball in hand and instead of placing the cue ball with his hands, he would roll it around with edge of stick. When he returned it, I had 3 large nicks in the shaft. I said never again...

My feeling is if you borrow something and break it, you should replace it.
 
You played, jump, and broke all with one cue? Jesus. I'm surprised it didn't break sooner...

I agree with not letting people use my cues. It doesn't happen.

And I also agree that it was a nice gesture for you to not hold the cue savage liable in any way.

I had a buddy with a ball polisher that malfunctioned with my balls in it, ruined 3or 4 of my near-new set of aramith super-pro balls. He offered to replace them and I told him no.
 
Wouldn't it have been cheaper and better for you if you simply changed out the hard tip to one of your liking so you can use the cue as the all-around cue it was before (instead of turning it into a break cue only)? This whole thing could have been avoided if that was the case.

After inspecting the broken shaft where it broke and found no evidence of faulty shaft, I would have reached a decision to either accept the offer for half or have him cover the whole cost.

No matter what it's a bummer that this happened, you may not find another shaft you like as well, but here's hoping you do.
 
Its a tough call on whether the guy who broke the shaft should replace it or not. I have driven other dudes race cars many, many times, sometimes a motor blows up, I have never been asked to pay for the engine. The engine would have broke at that time no matter who's foot was on the gas pedal. I also never asked to drive someone elses race car, I was the one asked to race it so that kind of changes things a little to for comparisons sake. The best practice is not to ask to use other peoples cues and do not lend yours out. Its one thing to hit a couple balls with someones cue, I would never hit a ball at break speed while trying out someones cue.

An uncollared shaft is far more likely to split than a collared one. In fact, one of my cue makers flat out told me he wouldn't make an un collared shaft.
