Brown Linen Phenolic

Are any of the custom cue makers on here having trouble finding the darker brown color phenolic rods like the phenolic butt cap in the first picture. I was talking to a well known custom maker the other day and he said he could not find it any more. The supplier that he was getting it from said they only have the lighter stuff like in the second picture. He said he does not like the color and will not use it. Is the dark brown phenolic still available and where can I get it from? PM me if you would like to keep it on the down low. If you have any to sell personally, please PM me too.

Thanks in advance for any leads!

I've been searching for it for a long time...I think it has not been made for about five years....the time it started to disappear...I was thinking of using dyes to similate the darker orange/brown color of the old stuff...

I haven't looked in a while but I would think the darker stuff or kind of wine colored would not be that hard to find, it was an off the shelf product, not made just for cues. The lighter stuff with a clean look I believe is produced for cue makers because the looks were important.

Please, by all means...have a look.;)

Thanks Varney! That Harris cue sure is a looker. Plays pretty good too!:)
You make some very nice cues yourself sir;)
I just find it hard to believe that with the mass quatity of this stuff being made, that it's that hard to find. Maybe it will be the next yellow micarta.

I spoke with atlas about the natural linen fiber and according to what I was told it had to do with the EPA having problems with the brown dye.

I did hear that there was an environmental issue but did not know exactly what is was. So far I have struck out on U.S. Plastics and Atlas. Still waiting on some others.

The last brown I bought was a little darker than Atlas stuff, and worked pretty good for me. It was called "Linen Base Garolite" (phenolic) rod. You can buy it from McMaster in 1 foot lengths.

Go to www.McMaster.com and search for part numbers 8470K431 and 8470K461.

I will tell you now, it ain't cheap. About $14 a foot for joint size and $23 for butt size. They also have it in canvas based, which is a little cheaper, but that's not as good looking in a finished cue. The weave is too pronounced.

Let me know if this helps.

I can't help it if you can't do your own research, a good start would be Spaluding.

Spaulding doesn't make it anymore either

A friend and I searched hi and lo a couple
of years ago, even talked to two manufacturers
that supply Atlas

I fear that like the Asbestos reinforced Micarta,
it is gone for good

That's pretty much the same thing I was told when I asked, and problems with a substitute to replace, and get the same color. I have also been told that when you find something You like, to buy in bulk, because you never know when the epa will shut a material down, and It becomes no longer available.:( I had hoped that was'nt the case here, because I always loved that color, and never got a chance to load up on any.

You have any pictures of these two types of Garolite?

I don't have any pics, no. I have some of the phenolic left that I had bought, but it is buried in boxes right now. I will take a pic in a few days if that helps. I will tell you that it is not as dark as what your first photo was, but much darker than that light stuff.

I've used the stuff. It works fine. Its a bit softer than linen. The tube I bought a couple of years ago was more tan...almost greenish if you will. It did get much darker with age...but at least the section I had showed lots of thrash particles in the weave.
Maybe its improved. I ask about getting it darker back then...they said they had no color control and that was as dark as they had.

I'm guessing old pix

That color looks good but I'd wager the image was
from a piece of the 'old stuff'

what is available now is the NEW version of natural
