brown phenolic....how to finish?

i bought a nice square block (1ft x 7in x 3in) of natural phenolic and noticed that the color is inconsistant thru the center of it. It has a dark 'vein' running thru the middle of it and the egdes are much lighter. do i scrap it or make tons of ferrules?

Is there a certain direction to cut phenolic? I have seen phonlic joints that look amazing. From the pics i have seen i can only see lilght colored dots and not a line or string of the canvas or the linen.

i bought some linen phenolic ferrules from hightower when i got my lathe. when i replaced the ferrule on my break cue certain spots didn't smooth out and clean up like the rest of it, i want to say its the resin or the actuall linen because it stays white and i can chip it off with my finger nail.

Thanks for any kind of help,
james

i orginally wanted to buy a rod, but i bought the piece for $6. figured i couldnt go wrong.

what can i do about the ferrules i already have from hightower?

James,
I believe what you've bought is flat-laminate phenolic. It's not used much anymore in cues because there are better forms of the matrl. now available. Most CMs today use phen. tube that is wound on mandrel. 10 times stronger. It's certainly alright to use what you have and depending on whether you have linen or canvas based, it gives a nice tortise shell effect on butt caps and joints.

As far as the ferrules, you need to talk to Chris. Honestly, you should always talk to the man you got the mtrls. from first, before bringing it to a forum. That's not fair to Chris. He's a good man to deal with and I'm sure he'll do right by you, given the chance.

Who on this forum (or any forum) will help you with Chris's mtrl. better than Chris? I know this sounds sarcastic but it's not meant to be. If you think about it, you'll see it's true. We good? Thanx, KJ

I suspect that you need to sharper your tools & take small cuts, on the phenolic. That may be the problem with the white, that is showing up. Also I find it best to have a small radius on my tool, when cutting this stuff...JER

thanks for the info guys.

KJ-I just read ur post about rolled phenolic and ill try to find a supplier. I didnt mean that Chis' materials where defective by any means, its working great on my break cue. i thought it was part of how i was finishing the the ferrule that was the problem. The square of phenolic I purchased from a local supplier, not Chris.
I feel the same way you do when someone has a problem with a persons product and comes on the board to 'bad' mouth them, instead of going to the supplier first. I didnt think i did that, and I apolgize if I came across that way.
Chris and this board have been a great help and I didnt mean any disrespect.

Here are some pics of the block i bought. Can I use it for joints, if so is there a certain direction to cut it? I dont mind scrapping it if it wont work.

That is first ferrule change i have ever done, and I used chris' phenolic, what do u guys think?

thanks for the help.

the ferrule looks like canvas based instead of linen.not sure why it wouldn't polish up after you sanded it though.
