as most on here know, i have a slight problem with getting those little tears in my Simonis 860 Cloth. was just curious if it is possible that brushing the cloth could cause those little tears? i really cant think of any other reason for my having them.

Quit practicing so many Tom Rossman jump and masse shots and stop using a wire brush, go to horsehair or synthetic. ;) Where are they? When I had Simonis 860 on my table I got a tear at the edge of the slate in a pocket, but it wasn't from brushing. Never heard of that......

DCP,
Just a note to let you know I'm 7 months into my experiment of NOT BRUSHING the cloth. For 2 years I brushed after every session or two (I practice about 2 hours a day), and the cloth looked significantly worn after a few months, and looked hideous after a year. Since I got my new GCIV, I have almost daily just wiped it down with a very moist (not dripping though), lint-free cloth (available at the automotive section at any Wal-Mart - cheap). I occasionally vacuum with a DustBuster, but very rarely. I will tell you that my cloth looks fabulous for as much play as it gets (looks like new except for the little white burn spots from power shots). I think I'm about through with brushing.

WBM,
thanks for that bit of advice. i am thinking of having Steve D. come down again after the holidays are over and putting new 860 on my GCIV again. i told him last year i would probably have him down about every year, nothing like having new cloth, its almost like getting a new table.

i might take your advice, and not brush. dont know why i get those little tears, i know its NOT from jumping. the only thing in common with my first cloth was the brushing, and it had those little tears also.

who knows i guess.

Simonis cloth as you all know is a worsted wool/nylon blend. This means the cloth is twisted before it is strung through the loom. Since it is twisted, the cloth makes for a very tight weave and it keeps the pilling down to practicaly nothing. I think brushing the table when needed and done so lightly is suggested. I always recommed that you brush the cloth from the foot to the head or vice versa. You dont want to break the weave. The small tears you are refering to is probably the cloth begining to come apart at certain parts due to brushing, cueing etc... Good luck

The pool room I used to work in had us wipe the simonis with a damp cloth and vaccuum under the railing. For the felt tables we were to brush from the break end towards the spot.

I use this on my Simonis - http://quick-clean.com/ ....I get excellent results. I have not had any problem brushing however.....I brush sometimes just to get extra clean.

DCP,
Even the old table (where I brushed every day) never had any tears or pilling. I like the theory about the possibility of defective cue tip, defective ferrule, or defective brush. You might ask Steve D., he sees an awful lot of tables.

P.S. - when I wipe the table, I wipe only in one direction, from head of table to foot of table (just like I brush).

I also have gotten my hands dirty working on many tables. Simonis generaly withstands a decent amount of wear and tear. But yeah there is definitly something causing the holes in the cloth. You just have to use process of elimination untill you point out the problem.

DCP! Sounds like it is time to hit your Peter w/ the lathe!

Do you have friends or kids that play on the table??? what cues are they using??? Do you have extra "house cues"????

I have a table and for the longest time I never had one tear...I was "given" a cue that a relative bought at a yard sale for $1.00...I did not look at the tip...I just put it in the cue rack at my house...The tip was junk and it had an "edge" right where the tip meets the ferrule...I noticed more and more "holes" in the cloth....I found the cluprit...threw out the cue and have not had any problems since.....and I have kids that play on my table...(well not actually ON it)

I am guessing its not YOUR cue...but...Check your loaner cues and perhaps any "banger" friends cues that play on your table....

I have 860 and I use a Dirt Devil hand vac that has a revolving brush. I use it almost daily with no problems ever. I've never used the brush I have. I also use a damp cloth about once a week. I have one small "snag" in the cloth and I have no idea how it got there but it didn't come from the vac.
