Buddy Hall gave up more weight than anyone! 1-9, the break, and the first shot!

And he had to shoot the 9 straight in the side, either side, no banking it or kicking it! I just got off of the phone with Buddy Hall a few minutes ago. I told him about me giving up the blue thru and the break, I asked him what was the most weight he ever gave up! He said I could post this too! This happened in Oklahoma City. Buddy Hall won the match! Man now that had to be some good shooting pool going on there!!!!!!

Buddy told me to tell everyone on AZB he was doing much better and he thanked all for their support during his illness!
Many Regards,

Reminds me of the game that Wade Crane offered that I read in Buddy's book. The offer was if anyone would go to his home court and bet 10K they wouldn't even have to bring their cue. If Wade failed to break and run out his opponent would win (they would have to spot him the break). Wade's break was considered the best at the time and nobody took him up on the offer. Another memorable Buddy spot was giving a good female player the wild 5,6,7,8, the break and the first shot after the break. If I recall correctly Buddy was up 30 some odd games much to the surprise of her husband.

She couldn't be "a good female player" if she got the break, the first shot after the break, the wild 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and still couldn't win.

The first shot isnt BIH i note.

Frankie Hernandez gave Monica the 5 out/breaks when Monica was a VERY good player so it isnt that far fetched imo. Frankie demolished her. I dont think they were wild on the break.

I would guess that the Buddy beating the other champions of his day even is a better feat than giving up weight like that. If the opponent couldn't win with that spot, it means he was completely helpless and probably wouldn't win against any pro with that spot.

I know where your coming from, but it was more of a testament as to how strongly Buddy was playing. They were only playing for $5 a game. His opponent wasn't a Jean Balukas, but if memory serves me correct (often times it doesn't) she at least became a fairly accomplished player. Now I'm really curious, so I'm going to have to go look for the book to find her name.

Well, I don't know about any of that.

But I do know that Varner came to St. Louis for a couple of years, maybe back in the early 2000's, and gave up such humoungous spots that Buddy declared a few year later, when he was trying to match up here locally, that Nick had ruined St. Louis for any other player passing through -- since all the locals had seen with their own peepers just how much Nick (or any other top pro) could give up to the shortstops and still get the cheese.

Good point....Buddy Hall giving Louie Roberts the 7 in a long session is
a lot stronger than giving a non-player the world.
Some other champions got the 8.

Funny Buddy Hall story.....

I trim my tips with a razor knife when my standard cutter is dull, then I use a fine tooth file. My best tool is a cutter blade I took out of a plastic slitting machine. It is a piece of hardened 1/8" steel about 12" long with a razor edge on one side. I set it flat on the shaft and angle it into the tip. BTW the backside of the cutter that touches the shaft is back rolled as not to hurt the shaft.

Leonard Bloodworth was nice enough to show me this method about 12 years ago at the Super Billiards Expo. I helped him with his setup and he paid me back by the best tip replacement lesson of all time.....

funny story.....after Mr Bloodworth showed me the right way to trim tips, I got to trim one of the tips he just glued while he watched and told me how to finish the shaping process. After burnishing, and final shaping, he takes the shaft from me, and hands it to Buddy Hall sitting there in his booth.! I guess if I realized whos shaft it was.....who knows how I would have screwed it up! I think they both got how i felt by the look on my face! Anyway, I was working in a machine shop back then so I was no newby to machines...I think Leonard got that?.....and I got a great story to tell!

good luck man....

"A good hit" was the most weight I ever saw someone give up.

Now that he is no longer with us I will tell you that it was Billy Peay who gave up that spot, and yes, he still won.

Hello PT109,
How goes it? I like getting good input from great people! Thanks.

I saw it in a couple of books where some one hole player (Jersey Red)? gave a spot where no balls he made in his hole counted-only the ones you made in his hole counted.

It is quite humbling to be made aware how good a top level player is.

Efren came thru MD in the 90s and gave 11/7- 12/7 to probably the top 1p player in the area. Efren won.

The 1 out, the breaks and first shot???? Sounds like it has less to do with how strong Buddy was playing and more to do with how bad the other player is. I'm terrible as all hell at this game, but I'll play anyone like that!

Hey Cleary,
The guy was good. He broke dry and didi not get a shot most of the time. He lost. And Buddy Hall will give you the same game whenever you want it!

Hey Lou,
Cleary said he would take that spot from anyone! I told him just say when and where! That is not a spot if you break dry playing buddy Hall or Nick Varner!!! Lou who are you betting on? Thanks for your good post too!

oh yeah. I play some of these guys in open events and sometimes fool myself into thinking I have a chance (and maybe in a race to four or three, I do). But out on the open range it is startling and more than a bit depressing to see just how much weight a pro can give the average shortstop.

lol, Lock N Load, I hear you.

Cleary: save your dough. I know it sounds great on paper, but trust me -- it sucks in real life. It's how Nick got everyone in town to line up and play him: "Hell, I'd play anyone with that spot."

You have to ask Keith, but I think Buddy gave Keith the 7 and beat him, at the original Hardtimes in Costa Mesa around 76--77'.
