Buddy Hall Instruction Series Video

btw: The 10th episode in this series features the spin NOT draw shot that was discussed here a while back.

The close up video at contact seems to confirm an absence of draw on the shot.

I tried this shot umpteen times and couldn't do it. Yesterday, I was playing a guy some 8b and a friend of mine who had been watching me try this shot before was playing on the next table. We started talking about this shot and the guy I was playing asked me to demo the shot. I did and hit it perfectly. The cb came back and I used nothing but sidespin. The friend of mine that was watching and I just started cracking up! I probably will never be able to do that shot again in my life!! LMAO!!!

For this shot to work well, the carom angle into the rail needs to be around perpendicular to the shots angle.
If the cueball goes forward after contacting the object ball, the spin is not enough to bring it back, it is not enough to overcome the angle.
Im having trouble explaining it any better, but think about it this way, if you have the cueball on the foot spot and kick into the head rail close to the left hand pocket with right spin, it is not as easy to get the cueball to move to the right off the rail as it would be if you were shooting into the middle diamond. The angle the ball goes into the rail is the important factor as to how well and what line the spin makes the cueball go once it hits the rail.

Buddy applies his spin with "tuck and Roll" style english and not standard english that most people apply. He also has a stroke smoother than almost anyone else on the planet, which most likely is the reason why he is successful with this shot while others are not.

I think it helps that the table is fast and the rails grip well.

The IPT nap cloth slides too much to make this shot possible, at least until the cushions wear and get a little dirty.
