Build a champion in a month or 2. Is this possible?

Missing some meals

Gene,

$30 a day for food = $900 per month.

You can learn to live happily on nothing more than cans of baked beans, bread, and canned vegetables.

1 can baked beans = $1.00
1 can vegetables = $0.50
4-5 bread slices = $0.25
Jug of water = $1.00
DAILY EXPENSE = $2.75 (We'll call it $3.00)

$3.00 x 2 people = $6.00 per day

Monthly Expense = $180

I just saved you $720 per month. And after a week or two you will be feeling healthier and certainly shooting better!

And finally, if you are in the least concerned about money and expenses, would you consider this some small matter? Think of what a burden will be released when you have an extra $720 in your pocket every month!

This math doesn't pan out, you budgeted for one meal, which is less than 600 calories, meaning in three meals they total caloric aggregate is less than 2,000 calories, fairly low for most people. I also don't know anyone that can eat a meal like this every day for months on end. Backpackers are notorious for bizarre light weight meals, but after long enough, even oatmeal can make you gag.

You've at least got to make your daily allotment, $9 ($3.00 x 3), then x2 (for two people), and you're at $18, then x30days and you're at $540, and probably causing both guys to lose 10-20lbs per month. In particular with Gene's blood sugar issues, he's probably dead by now, and they've probably been too light headed to win many games, losing money on the road. So while you have saved them both some money on skimping on food, you've cost them their energy which has netted them a greater loss.

I lived on Ramen in college, and prided myself on an austere life-style but I don't think the meal you offer is realistic, then again I may be taking your comments far too seriously if it was all in jest. :)

Cooking your own food at $30/day.. you better be ending the day with a steak or something.

Took me about 6 or so hours, but I stuffed my freezer with almost 60 breakfast burritos a week ago, at a total cost of maybe $35 or $40. That would put a breakfast cost at about $1.50 for the two of you, plus some fruit and a drink, probably running at about $3/each. Make a light sandwich for lunch, another $2/each with good ingredients. Have a decent dinner, even going big to leave leftovers.. $5/each is reasonable.

Gotta change your tag line there..

Two men, a van, a hot plate and the road.

I always imagined a conversion van, for food storage and sleeping and whatnot.

Is this what you are talking about? http://www.nutribullet.com/

Just what recipe are you using?

Yep, that's it. It comes with a small recipe book, but I've kind of just been mixing different things up. All week, breakfast has been

1. Baby Spinach
2. Blueberries
3. Raspberries
4. Banana
5. Some almonds
6. Vanilla Protein Powder
7. A few ice cubes and some water

Turn it on for about 15-20 seconds, and you end up with a really smooth beverage. I have it at around 6am, and it has no problems holding me over until lunch, which is at 12pm. For dinner, I try to do the same thing. Except, I leave out all the fruits except the banana, and go with more greens.

I got it because I wanted to eat healthier, but couldn't stand to actually eat all of that food. Much easier to just drink it.

No, my comments were the opposite of jest. A medium/large can of baked beans typically has 700/800 calories. A whole wheat bread slice has roughly 100 calories. So 5 slices is 500 calories. A can of corn is roughly 200 calories. This equals 1,500 calories.

I've lived on this diet for several months, and all the while working a regular job. Never light headed, never felt weak. Most people can't do it because their mind tells them they can't. The body is just fine with it. I will say that I often had whole garlic gloves with my bread.

No jesting, it's the exact opposite of jest. And once your body adjusts, you will see that the food you pay so dearly for doesn't offer you much in the way of comfort or pleasure.

Hey Big Spender,

Get rid of that jug of water expense and you're down to $120 a month in food expenses.

Tap water is available practically everywhere for free.

If you're passing through the town of Abita Springs in Louisiana, you can fill up your jugs with spring water for free.

Your words are wise. I thought hard about including the jug of water. You've proven to me that I should have omitted it. See how little it costs to eat and drink?

This is how the money just seems to disappear......

I always imagined a conversion van, for food storage and sleeping and whatnot.

I kept careful track about what we spent.

We got up just in time to get to the poolroom for the tournament.

Zack ordered a chicken sandwich with some fries. He can eat that junk, I can't being diabetic. It got him by.

I ran down to subway to get a quick sandwich. Between Zack and myself we spent about $15 right there.

Zack drank 2 monster energy drinks. I tell him they need to stop. Not only are they $3.50 apiece but they are really bad for your health.

I had 3 bottles of water for the night at $1.50 each and 2 cups of coffee for $1.00 each.

Right there we had already spent $28.50 for one meal each.

I ran back to the room and made 2 really good sandwiches with turkey and cheese and some real whole wheat bread.

When you add the entry fees for the tourny of $15 each. Then the $15 each for table time for the whole night.

Then after 2:00 AM the $15 daily special is done. Now we are both on hourly rate.

My time was $18.50 and Zacks was about $25.

Motel room is $40 per day and that's cheap.

Food and Drinks $28.50
Entry fees $60.00
After hour rate $43.50
Motel room $40.00
Total $173.00

This is how the road can eat you up and you don't even know what's happening.

Have you ever heard the joke about ....How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time:)

This is what the road does.........Eats you up and your bankroll one bite at a time:rolleyes:

This wasn't the typical day but it happens sometimes. The only thing we have much control over is the food. But you better be putting good stuff in the tank or your not going to get very good mileage.

The subway I ate cost be $400. I was so wore out at 4:00AM I didn't take down the final set breaking me even. I'm finding that the bread in subway is not very diabetic friendly. Must be too many carbs in the bread? I don't really know.

The good news was zack won $1000.00. He's almost ready to play some real top caliber pool. He can feel it happening too. Plus I can see it. WOW..........it's happening and it's exciting........

This is what is really tough. Until your out here doing the real thing it's hard to see where the money is going.

I player going out there playing has to really win win win to stay on the road.

The road can be on tough animal but with some knowledge and discipline anyone can tame the beast.

Right now I need to make some good sandwiches and get to the poolroom. Zack is there already and probably has some action. Need to keep good stuff in his tank. If I don't he will sure find something not so good. The good news is he is only 23 and at that age your body runs pretty good on junk. But not all the time. it will catch up with you.

@ men a van and the road..........

Better cover that with a perfect aim lesson!

I know where your coming from with the cost of food.
When I worked on the road I carried an electric frying pan and a lean mean grilling machine. One trip to the grocery store can save you big. Buy your bottled water by the case and put it in a cooler. Buy a 20$ bag of weed and he will eat anything lol j/k . I would cut him back on the energy drinks.
A microwave comes in handy also. Shop like you would at home, I was on the road for months at a time living in motel rooms and the cost of food was always an issue. You learn to cut corners on meals after a while. My friends were eating Mc Donald's and I was boiling potatoes and making soup, you can boil or fry chicken with the right accessories. I also like to cook and understand that's not for everyone
Good luck and thanks for the updates

hi there Mr pete,

There is allot to be said for the term, Been there/Done that.

And the food you ate had allot more nutrition for sure.

If you were ever to go on the road you would get it right from the start.

Once you understand the how's and whys it's so simple.

If someone wrote a book titled Survival on the Road you would be able to write the food part for sure. Experience is the best teacher.

Yeah the energy drinks are just a form of drugs. I tried some of those Five Hour Energy ones when I was in OKC to keep me awake while driving around the country. My god those things had me WIRED.

Better to use water and fruit. I mean honestly, there is SO MUCH information out there for any type of activity on what the best way to manage energy levels are that you guys should definitely be using the net to be modern about this.

And you can purchase an entire roasted chicken at Sam's for around $7 total. Two guys can eat on that for at least two meals unless you are big eaters. You can also microwave baked potatoes/sweet potatoes.

4.85 at the Des Moine Sams Club.........

I buy most of my stuff there. Meat, chicken, eggs, fruit. You name it they got it and at a cheaper price than most places for sure.

And the chickens are about twice the size of the walmart chickens and taste much better.

Got to Big Dogs and guess what............

I get there and Zach is playing probably the best one pocket player in the place. His name is Justin. I'm thinking Oh Boy.

Then I see that he's ahead. In fact he got ahead 7 games for $100.

I'm over winning this mini tourny and Zach is still playing and pretty soon they quit. Zach had given Justin 9 to 8 spot. Zach shouldn't have done this because I think he is an underdog right from the start. Justin plays this one pocket as good as any pro out there from what I understand.

Zack had lost 4 games in a row giving Justin 9 to 8 and said he wasn't giving him the spot anymore. If i would have seen what was going on there wouldn't have been any spot at all for sure.

The 4 games Zach lost back were not even close. pretty one sided.

Looks like they are going to play a set or ahead set tomorrow for $1000. I'm not too excited about the game but if Zach plays well he has a chance. I just wish he wouldn't have started this with Justin. He just ruined a bunch of cheaper action by playing him at all.

Anyway Zach did come out about $300 ahead and I won $50 so the night was not wasted.

We also got back to the motel and the guy at the desk says he has a friend that likes to gamble. He just happened to be at the computer in the lobby when we got back at 3:00. We got talking and he wants to play some $50 a game 9 ball on the bar table at the bar next door at 2:30 tomorrow.

If he plays at all he can play Zack or myself. I can stay and play him while Zack heads down to Big Dogs to play Justin.

Just my luck the guy wins one game and quits. I'm pretty sure he can't win.

We got action. Some we want and some maybe not.

As long as the bankroll goes up we're in business.

Zack is right on track. I'm ready to do some more training now that he has played for 3 weeks. His addressing the ball is rough and he needs to learn how to measure balls.

I kid around with him now and call him $100 a rack Zach. Has a nice ring to it if he keeps winning.

Need some sleep to get ready for another exciting day.

Another adventure.

If you play this kid, make him post up.

I played him one pocket last night and I got stuck 8 games so I said I was done unless he wanted to spot me a ball. He gives me 9-8, I win three games back real quick and he quits me.

This pissed me off a little so I said, "F**k the spot, I'll play you a race to 10 for $1000 even." I let him pick the time and I told him which table we would be playing on so he could hit balls on it. It's not a trick table or anything. It just rolls straighter than the one we were playing on.

I show up on time today and guess what? No Zach. I get ahold of him and he refuses to play on that table. I tell him, "That's fine, we will play on a different table." Then he wants to change the game to 7 ahead instead of a race. I told him to go f**k himself and go back to bed.

Guess I learned a lesson today. It wasn't a perfect aim lesson, but a lesson none the less. Next time I make a game with someone from out of town, they are going to post show money.

Sorry to put something negative on your thread, but I'm not very happy right now.

I think these 2 guys are going to match up. 2 great guys here Zach and Justin.....

Justin said he wanted to play on the table next to the one they are playing on and Zack did agree.

He played some cheap one pocket with Jimmy until 3:00AM on the table and I could hear them both talking about how much more springy the rail were and the balls were sliding in the pockets. They were too easy they were saying.

I know Zack told him he'd switch tables thinking they played the same but the difference is pretty extreme.

About being late. We found out the room we are staying at is infested with bed bugs. Zack is all bit up. He has one big welt on his right arm and another under his arm pit. Numerous bites everywhere else. We were still awake at 8:00am

I told Zack he shouldn't play today. Not enough sleep. He still wants to try and work out something though. I didn't even wake up when Zach left. I don't like the fact of not enough sleep.

As far as the table. Zack didn't know how different they played. Justin should know because he plays there all the time. I don't blame Justin for being upset about the table but there was nothing cut in stone about absolutely playing on that table.

At this time also i like Zach playing ahead sets VS races. He needs to play and grind all he can. He's only been playing for 3 weeks after a 9 month layoff from pool. He needs to play, play and play some more. An ahead set gives him an opportunity to play longer with that $1000 pressure.

Our goal right now is not to break anyones piggy bank but to build a champion. Playing with the pressure of the bigger money is a huge part of this.

Zach is going to make some mistakes out here on the road. With Justin his first mistake was telling him he would switch tables without knowing how different they played and the difference is huge. I hit some balls on it also.

As far as the race to 10 VS 7 ahead, Zack has to tell players right away that he wants to play ahead sets instead of races. That was a mistake also.

At 7:00 and still awake I wanted Zack to call off the match because we didn't get enough sleep. This bed bug thing is crazy. I itch all over and I'm sure Zach has new bites today. I think Zack slept with his coat on and clothes. Don't know if it helped. He was gone when I got up at 3:00PM. He must have gotten only 5 hours of sleep at the most.

Zach should have called Justin and told him he couldn't play because of not enough sleep. We had no way of predicting this bed bug thing. Zach still wanted to play but on the same table and a 7 ahead set, but he wanted to play.

I think playing Justin with 5 hours of sleep is pool suicide. He plays awful good one pocket. He is the man in Des Moines Iowa.

The bad news is that Zack is playing Mike now that he is at the poolhall. He lost to Mike the other day. Now he's playing on not enough sleep.
The good news is they are only playing for $50 a game. The bad news is you can still lose the same amount playing for $50 as you can for $100. It just tales a little longer and this kid Zach has no quit. If Mike asks Zack to play for $100 I'm afraid it's done. Again I don't like the no sleep.

I don't think Zach ever lost a pool match in his life. He just ran out of money.

Anyway, these are 2 really great guys, Justin and Zach , and they are both gentleman of the game. Once they get a game figured out I think they still might play. There is still time. we're not going anywhere until next monday except another room that doesn't have bed bugs.:p

Another lesson for Zach. Don't agree to change the game too quickly. Like the table switching.

If you would rather play an ahead set say it right away. I'm sure Justin would have just as soon played that way too if said up front.

And if you don't get enough sleep fore some reason don't play. There is always tomorrow.

Sorry Justin about the way this came down here. Zach is young and is going to make some mistakes. I hope you and Zach can figure out a way to play some before we go. He could learn from you. And he does need to learn.

I have some real good advice for everyone though.

Don't let the Bed Bugs Bite:rolleyes:;)

Gene,
Is it "sound business" to adjust the spot after winning one session with a great player, or is it "smarter" to simply come back and fight another day with a spot adjustment or not?

I couldn't believe that Zach had given a spot that quick.

Gene,
Is it "sound business" to adjust the spot after winning one session with a great player, or is it "smarter" to simply come back and fight another day with a spot adjustment or not?

I know what Justin is capable of. he is a great one pocket player and probably understands the game as good as anyone.

I wasn't there when they started and Zach had his wires crossed and thought Justin was someone else.

I told Zach that if a guy wants a spot that quickly that it might be a good idea to just quit. If he plays some more fine. If he quits fine.

You have some time to evaluate the game a little if he quits. If he keeps playing your going to see everything he's got.

Both ways you get tons of valuable information that can do nothing but help you.

We talk about everything after the fact. Sometimes you have to make the mistake to learn from it. I know Zach knew it might be a mistake. The good news is that when he makes a mistake now he's making it for me also. Now he has someone else to answer to and explain why he does something that was borderline a mistake.

I don't say much to Zach most of the time. He's got a good head on his shoulders. He's just got to learn how to keep using it all the time.

The battle can over ride the brain if you let it. That's why it is good to have someone on the outside looking in.

Like a general watching the battlefield. It's easier to see what's going on when your not firing a gun.

Thanks for the insight Mr Joey.....Your spot on and correct..........
