Build a champion in a month or 2. Is this possible?

Good day at the Big Dogs in Des Moine........

My shoulder felt terrible when I got up. i iced it but it still felt pretty weak.

I got there about 30 minutes late. Mike and his backer were there waiting. And the backer is a really nice guy when he is sober like today.

Mike and myself started right out for $100 rack 9 ball again. After about 4 hours of grinding it out I got back $700 that i lost the day before.

I should have quit at that time because my arm and hand were feeling kind of numb. Whatever is going on in my shoulder is causing this.

I played for about 2 more hours and finally I couldn't play at a high level anymore and lost the $700 back.Mike played at a very high level at this time.

Zack was over on another table playing some local guys cheap $50 sets and had won about $150. He was kind of excited when I told him I was going to have him play Mike and I think Mike was too.

As luck would have it, it seemed like Mike ran out of gas right about the time we quit. Zack and Mike played 5 ahead for $500. It only lasted about 45 minutes and Zack won.

I set up a couple of lessons for tomorrow also.

Then real late at night one of the young guns came up to me and wanted to play a cheap $50 set he said for fun. I thought this will be fun as long as I win.

i beat him one set. Zack came over and they both decided to play the next one and Zack lost $50.

Funny how this worked today. You never know what is going to happen in this pool world of ours. Second day here we just about get back to even.

Another great day and some good memories.

The Road

With this kind of record, you and Zack can never be accused of stealing anything.

As road players go, you and Zack are just giving your money away.

You'd better start winning more dough or that insatiable beast will start demanding a pound of flesh. :D

It was our first big mistake............

First we got up early. Then we packed up. Then we drove 200 miles or so. Then we found a motel room. Then we hurried down to the poolhall to play in their Monday night 8 ball tourny and both made it to the finals.

We didn't really even eat well that day.

What I do with Zack is go over the things we did the day before and how we could have done it better.

The solution on Monday would have just been to chalk it up as a fun day and go back to the room after the weekly tourny.

The action will keep for sure. In fact it will keep for a long time.

Eat, sleep and excersize and push ourselves to the limits with our endurance. There is a difference between being tired and being wore out.

Tired is usually because of not enough sleep and it happens at these big tournys but tired should never be a part of gambling. You can pick and choose your times. We all know this kind of but it's hard to resist that action right now.

Wore out we have to get used to because many matchups are decided because the other player just gave up a little mentally or physically or both. This is what we need to build up to be a champion and Zack already knew that we had made a mistake. he's a smart kind.

What happened Monday will never happen with Zack and myself again. If we learn from our mistakes we're way ahead of the game.

In a way it was good that Monday happened. There is nothing better than experience the mistake and talking it over afterwards the next day. The next day you look back and say "You got to be kidding"

Hopefully when I'm gone Zack will remember this lesson forever and that is a long time to get it right.

I haven't kept track but with tournaments and gambling Zack and Geno seem to be ahead of the road so far. I didn't include the lessons.

The lessons are the ace in the hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The lessons are the ace in the hole for the players and for us. We will keep moving every week so the lessons and the action stay pretty fresh. No spoils here.

I did the shopping today to get all the food we need for the week and scoped out the fitness center.

I took Zack down to Big Dogs where he's playing a race to 9 for $100. Staying in action and staying healthy. I need to keep him on track there.

Other than that he knows what to do, now he just has to keep doing it better and better.

I got a lesson at 10:30 tonight so it's adios.

Kind of get our bearings day at Big Dogs in Des Moine iowa.

This has got to be the nicest pool hall in Iowa for sure.

Great place to play and a great place to be.

They had better stay ahead of the road or it will eat them alive.

I agree. My ace in the hole on the road was selling my cases. Gene's is giving lessons.

The difference between myself and what Gene is doing is that he is wiling and able to gamble and play events as part of the whole endeavor's financial picture.

I was on the road to sell cases and so playing events and matching up was taking away from that.

So Gene is approaching the tournaments and matching up in a professional manner, willing to match up but not stupidly from what I can see. Not hustling and not stealing, just taking calculated risks and seeing where it goes.

And as it happens, the more he wins or breaks even against good players, who will tend to be the better players wherever he goes, the more his "product" is promoted.

All in all a win/win situation for the most part as long as they don't get their noses open and go off and get flat busted. But as you and I know, as long as a player has a good stroking arm it doesn't take long to pump back up. Especially if you have a fall back like lessons, cases or Pots and Pans for sale.......

Recoup day for me/action for Zack..........

I woke up from Zacks phone again at noon. he had big ideas of getting up at noon after we went to bed at 6:00AM. His alarm woke me up but he didn't even move.

If he doesn't shut that phone off tonight he's going to have to sleep in another room. I have to get my sleep. I have sleep apnea and have enough trouble sleeping. Zack doesn't understand but he will.

Zack played Som for about 6 hours. He ended winning $200. And he got a great workout.

My 7:30 lesson was too tired after work and rescheduled for tomorrow. That will be tough because I am doing a free seminar for the leagues .

There is still some really good action that hasn't even came into the poolhall. Zack will have his hands full but i want to keep him in action.

We worked out tonight at anytime fitness after the pool hall closed. This is what Zack needs. About 30 minutes of cardio and then a few sets of everything but not max weight. 3/4 of max.

This is what I did when I was playing the best pool of my life. Worked out 4 days a week. I don't see why it would not work out for Zack. He's younger than I was when I relized I had to work out. He can turn that body of his into a machine. i'll show him how to do it.

Being diabetic I need to workout also. It's a matter of life and death for me.

That Som plays pretty good. He's a pretty strong player. One of those that would be able to play professionally if the right circumstances were there and there was a pro tour.

He needs to learn Perfect Aim.

Life and work keeps all these great local players at home. There is just no way to justify them trying to run around the country. Too many responsibilities at home to go anywhere.

Need some sleep and get ready for tomorrow.

Looks like it will be a fun one.

Zack is at a high level right now........

In a month or two...I don't know. The most talented player I've ever personally been around picked up a cue for the first time at thirteen and six or seven months later was playing pro speed and went on to win five or six junior national titles. I would think if a person had that kind of talent AND the drive to do something with it one or two months might be possible...maybe.

What many players don't know it is all the things behind the scene that can make huge differences.

Many young guys going to school get enough excersize and good food accidently.

One school is done and they are out on their own the bad eating habits, little excersize and bad sleep habits can take their toll. Many young players play pretty good abusing their health but it will catch uop to them sooner or later.

Zack has already commented on how good he feels after excersizing. How much better he feels with a steady diet of good real food.

And the sleep part is huge also.

In order to get the most from a car motor you have to have it tuned up.

One bad injector or spark plug can be the difference between winning the race or losing it.

Many of the older players that play at a higher level when they were younger need to really work at getting things right with the body if they want to bring back their game.

It doesn't just happen by accident. it's a long, hard, purposeful regiment that has to be followed to a fault.

That's the biggest thing I can offer Zack while on the road.

How to get it right and keep it right.

Back in the late 80's Tony Zierman made the comment about me to a friend. I overheard the comment. He said. He doesn't play that much better than everyone else. Why does he win all these tournaments?

If Tony would have followed me around and watched what I ate, drank. How I excersized and slept he would have gotten his answer.

If you read this Tony and want to get in top form give me a call.

Eat right, excersize, sleep right and play lots of pool........

It's not the only way but it works.........

That is a great point about eating right and exercising. Personally, I am my own worst adversary. I was a little overweight, ate like crap, smoked, slept very irregularly yet played decent for me. About 6 months ago I started eating better and cutting some of the garbage out and I am starting to feel a little better. Lost a little weight now I need to start exercising and get rid of some other "unnecesaries" to keep improving. The biggest advantage I can see of eating healthy, getting appropriate rest, and being in shape is that it helps the body handle stress so much better. I can see some of the positive effects so I am hoping continuing along that path will bring greater rewards. Good luck and keep at it.

Good for you Mike/////////

Zack got up on a guy $400. Lost it back. He blamed it on too much sleep.

I think the real reason was he skipped our energy drink today. Red grapes, blueberries and real cranberry juice.

I forgot also. It also feeds the brain.

He'll figure it out. Eat well, sleep right and excercise.

And play, play and play some more.

I think Zack will play just fine tomorrow..

Do you blend the red grapes and blueberries with the cranberry juice in a blender or do you purchase a particular brand already done?
Thanks,

Back home for Christmas..HO HO HO.........

Where are you guys headed next?

I need to drop off Zack in Madison, Wi. His vehicle is there and he will head to Appleton.

After Christmas I have a favorite tourny in Faribault, Minn.

$75 entry 8 ball and 9 ball the way it used to be. Winner break.

This tourny at the KC club has been going on for years and I wouldn't miss it for anything.

Kind of like the US open of Minnesota. It's been full for a month already.

After that Zack and myself will be heading down through Ohio. And hopefully make it to the Derby Classic.

Hopefully see everyone there.

Player came to the room to get Zack........

Never had this happen before.

Zack has been sick with this cold stuff that makes you want to sleep forever. Zack gets pissed at himself and says he doesn't play good when he sleeps too long. I told him be happy you can sleep. Too much sleep is one excuse that just ain't right. You can never get enough sleep. it's what recharges your batteries of life.

Anyway, when the guy came to the room I told Zack you need a spot. He must really think he has a fish. His reply back was my backer sent me over.

I thought to myself, good comeback and probably an honest one.

This conversation is going on as I'm cooking eggs and toast for Zack in the bathroom.

This is a first for me. In all my years I have never had a player worried that I wasn't going to show up and come to the motel room to get me.

The only thing that I'm worried about is that Zack is still sick. He thinks he isn't but the sleep tells me different. i had this cold/virus thing for 3 weeks and everyone I talked to had it for 3 weeks. It kind of lulls after about a week but is still there. then you get real sick again and it lasts for 2 more weeks.

Today i'll find out how tough Zack is. I know he's still sick.

i think Zack wins. I'm betting on it.

Another day, another adventure.

They had a 10 ball tourny tonight. Hopefully I'll win that. Another $100.

I'll also pass out fliers and round up a lesson or 2.

I feel great. I got 9 hours of sleep and got excercise 2 days in a row. I'm ready to rock and roll.

This old man is going to beat someone today also. If i get played.

The players here are a little reluctant to play me. They know if the right Gene shows up it will not be a pic a nik. Like Yogi Bear used to say when he was looking for a pic a nik basket.

I need to get down to the poolroom. I need to see if there is any funny business going on.

The guy Zack is playing isn't as good as he is. If Zack can't win I need to make sure there is no funny business involved.

If Zack doesn't seem right I need to pull him up.

The young man Zack is playing said the other day that a friend of his gave him some kind of pill and he felt jarred and couldn't play pool too good. That story kind of bothered me. You need to be careful when your playing someone and they were talking about being jarred or taking some kind of pill the day before.

I need to see how Zack is acting and shooting and make sure he didn't accidently get jarred himself.

This guy has no business beating Zack.

Need to get down there and make sure there is nothing rotten doing on in dodge.

Zack had him stuck $400 last night and lost it back.

Got to protect my young champion.

Probably nothing to it and everything is fine but you never know?

ounce of prevention on the side of precaution is never wasted on the road.
