Building a Table

... With all of the different suppliers out there selling pretty much all the same stuff for close to the same pricing, I do look to other peoples' experiences with these companies/individuals, so I appreciate any input you guys can give. ...

Keep in mind BW is a cloth & table supply house and they are a distributor for several cloth brands. All the cloth is cut and packaged in-house and it's rare for them to be out of a catalog color. When you look at the other "billiards suppliers" like Dawg, Ozone, Seyberts, etc I think you may notice their emphasis is more on cues, cases & accessories and not table service products which is what BW is known for. Just a tidbit of input :D and a few pics to give an idea of their cloth inventory which is more extensive then these few pics.

This is the problem with forums. Just when you think there is a useful thread, someone comes and hijacks it and fills it with useless information.

I appreciated the post. It was direct, to the point. Furthermore, the man was willing to assist, which is the point of forums. Thank you!

One good thing about asking questions in this part of the forum is that, as a rule, you usually get accurate answers even tho there are times some debate and flaming occurs along the way. Another good thing is that members often make referrals to other reputable & contributing members that are known to provide various products and services.

In this particular case Rob wanting to help out is admirable but it just makes sense to check out a source before putting your name on a referral. Just for chits and grins I called the guy with the $149 cushions. He has no store, no website and NO Artemis cushions. He stated he usually sells on AZB but if that were the case I would expect he would have more than 1 post under his belt. Does useless information get any worse?

Now back to your table - feel free to post pics and ask questions along the way. There are plenty of very experienced folks here that can help.

*btw - 1 7/16" is usually the consensus cushion nose height (19 degree bevel)

Table Build

I hope I'm not too late with this piece of advice that I think will save you many a sleepless night and a lot of $$$$$. I built my own 9' table in 2009. I used the plans shown in 'Fine Woodworking' magazine, #75, March/April 1989. (Yes, The magazine article was 20 years old). The article is entitled "Building A Pool Table". They do have some dimensions for rail lengths in the article for an oversized 7' table with a playing area between cushions of 40" x 80". However, the stated dimensions may not be proper for your table and that is not the reason for this post.

The reason I am posting this is that, based on my experience, the primary value of the article is that it will give you the SEQUENCE for your build. That is one of the most important things for you to know so you don't have to re-do something because you built it or assembled it in the wrong order. And, believe me, there is definitely a right and wrong order when building a pool table if it's going to play properly when you're finished. Plus, there is just a whole lot of other background information that will help you in so many related areas of your table building project. Reading the article will give you a real education.

So, my advice would be to use the dimensions and other ideas recommended by the experienced mechanics in this forum and use the Fine Woodworking article for the thinking process and really clear instructions on how to go about gluing up, building and cutting all components, including frame, legs, rails, pockets, etc.

I believe you can order reprints from Taunton Press which publishes Fine Woodworking Magazine.

Please post photos when you finish and best of luck with your project. You will amaze yourself and your friends.

Speedi, thanks for the advice.

I plan on video taping the whole process, which is why I am being so precise with the design instead of perhaps coming up some of the measurements...dynamically (on the fly).

I should be able to start on the carcass within the next week.

i have always wanted to build a table as well.i look forward to seeing how this is done.im sure i will learn alot.

good luck

Powdertrack, I'm with coryjames here! Please do videotaping, though I think just good quality pictures would do. Then you are supposed to explain your route in detail, and voilas, we have another DIY project to follow!
Good luck with your table and please keep posting how you proceed.
