Building Customers

I was wondering why pool Rooms don't start High School Leagues?
Could run them in the afternoon with free table time, some instruction and maybe Trophies.
You could end up with teams from various schools playing in Tournaments or a Intramural League. If you develop more customers and offer instruction you could end up with them coming back at night or other days and paying for table time.

Could end up with a lot more interest and customers from a new generation!

i thought that was a good idea 30 years ago. back then it was surely not considered in most every place. they were not ready to mix pool with school. i think it would be like turning a big corner for the game and how some people think of it as a sport. i would love to see every city and town have a high school pool team and compete in local conferences.

does anything anywhere like this happen now ? in other countries maybe?

I know the room I play at has old pictures on the wall of Kids at some kind of National Tournament, so at one poit it was being done in some form.
I know a lot of places seem to dislike High schoolers playing.
I think that training and learning to "respect the equipment comes from being around people who know how to.
When I was younger there used to be a lot of kids on dates playing on weekends, but I don't see that anymore.
The future of Poolrooms rests on the next generation!

family center

I have toyed with the idea of a family center based on pool. Think a nice bowling alley with all the amenities, then swap out the bowling lanes for pool tables. The Billiards Den in Richardson Texas, right above Dallas, has very close to the design I would like but I don't think they have the focus on the family.

The ultimate would be like some bowling alleys have done and work out deals with schools so students actually come to the pool room for a PE class for six or nine weeks.

Hoorraaayyy, someone else sees it. We need to build the system from the ground up...start with the young. My local pool hall is suffering because they don't have the 16-25yo segment in their place every night like they did 5 years ago. You've got to keep building new players to stay alive. Work with your local school during the day and reap the rewards at night.

Free instruction will build better more interested players. Team competiton with skill and levels will build interest.

Then they come back at night to practice and bring friends along!
Free pool would allow cash strapped Schools to offer a free sport.
Everyone wins!

Hard Times Billiards in Sacramento has a Senior High School class that shows up every morning at 8 am for a 2 hour Class. The High School instructor has a certified High School class for seniors only. It is similar to a Tennis, bowling, archery or physical education elective for Seniors.

This class also has a certified BCA instructor to assist with the game rules and tournaments. This is a Co-ed class and all the students get a $1/hr rate with their student ID until 10pm unless accompanied by a parent.

BTW, this was started in 1999 and still continues for the entire school year.

This is what is needed to promote the Sport!!!
Any idea if it has had a positive impact on the nightly busniess?

Most of the students come by on a regular basis. Some play in the weekly B player only tournament ($5 entry). Some become some of the better players in the room.

Of course it has a positive impact.
