well to start with, the shaft is obviously a lot heavier with the pin built in... this adds a distinct shift in the balance point ... and overall, the cue tends to feel lighter ... and long smooth strokes tend to come easier...

by and large, i think it is a "feel" thing ... i like it...

That is a very-very nice cue at a great price and kamdaswani is a very nice guy!

Good luck with the sale, kam!

i also like a forward balanced cue

i always wonder why burton did this and no one seems to have a clue

One possible reason. If you epoxy a pin into the shaft part of a joint, the resulting shaft portion of the joint, the weakest part, should be less prone to split at the end. The joint portion of the handle is thicker, so it's stronger. Another reason is Eddie Laube built cues that were like tanks with the pin in the shaft - and he was in the Chicago area too during Burton's rise - so maybe Burton just liked Laube's style. You could stand on a Laube joint and the wood would break before the joint would.

In terms of play, I have a couple Spain's, an old one from the 1970's and one of the later signed/numbered cues. I don't think there is any difference in the balance because the screw is in the same position as any other cue when the cue is screwed together. The ones I have both feel totally neutral and have a soft hit. His joint material is soft, and if I recall there is no wood to wood contact. I like the neutral balance but the the hit is too soft for my taste, but I could get used to it. I'm not sure exactly why but I would compare the hit to a Meucci - if you know what I mean - and they play just fine otherwise.

In my opinion, the radial pin has dated all the old joints making everything else but the 3/8X10 or 11 obsolete.

i was talking to -R- about this yesterday. i stopped using piloted joint and started using 3x8-10 sw sytle pin. flat faced joints seem to be taking over

jerry however did remind me that many many great playing cues were made with piloted joint.

you think gus would make non piloted joints today???

joss was using ff 3x8-10 in the early 70's

It's hard to say. He would probably use what his customer's preferred or requested to a certain extent. He did make a flat faced 3/8X10 capped ivory joint and it was as good as anything out there today.
