Hello,

I am making this topic to ask you whether you have a picture of Burton Spain - I have seen one taken of him in the Blue Book of Pool Cues 3rd Edition but I cannot get it from there as I have the book and not the CD.
He is my favorite cue maker, I am looking for everything that is related with him.
If you own any of his cues, please write here, I would like to read about him as much as possible.
I have searched for him in this forum and by time I will check all the threads that contain his name.

Thank you very much in advance, take care,
Pooh

Spain wrote a short book on making blanks that was copywrighted in 1992. He wrote the classic metaphor that likens the short spliced blank to an alligator. Have you seen it? It is a must for any big Spain fan. Joel Hercek sent me a copy some years ago. "Making Blanks: The Recollections of Burton Spain." There's no picture of the author though. I'll keep my eyes out for a photo.

Hi Pooh,
Here are 2 of my Burton Spain cues which I think you will enjoy..
Both of these cues are from Burton Spains personal collection..

The Fancy 6 point cue is Burtons Personal playing cue..
The other cue is a Moon cue that has the rare reverse pin which Burton tucked away..
Best,
Ken

I put my name in for a new Hercek about 2 yrs. ago and Joel said that he was out of the booklets and wasn't sure if he was going to have any more made.

Thank you all very much for your replies!

Drawman: I've read a few lines about that book in this forum back when I searched for Burton's name. I've found the forumer who owns Burton Spain's book and another cue maker's too - I forgot the latter one, will check it soon, sorry about that... Anyways, thank you for the info I will start a search for that book too!

Ken: Thank you for the amazing pictures! That six point cue is astonishing! I have a picture of a similar one.
Burton Spain 1978 - Model 34,2 - full butt + 2 shafts.jpg
Back when I first saw this cue at chalkers' website I knew that this is it for me... I like many of the designs of today's cue builders but for some reason I always seemed to love the 'older' ones more. And when I saw this cue it had everything, beautiful craftsmanship, amazing design, everything was chosen so well that it amazed me...
...and owning Burton Spain's personal playing cue is... just unimaginable to me...
Anyways... I believe that I have seen a Joel Hercek cue that was inspired by Burton's Moon design and I love that one too as it is not too fancy yet it's elegant and unique.
Thank you for the pictures once again, Ken!

Hackerda: thanks for the info, I hope that he'll have some more made and that once I'll be able to get one. When will you receive your Hercek?

1st edit: I've found the other cuemaker's name that had a book, it was DPK - I knew it already but I wasn't sure enough so I searched for it again.

2nd edit: are those mitered veneers around the boxes? (and are there double red veneers too?) Sorry, but I can't tell it from the picture but I'm very curious

Not for around 6 yrs. Give me enough time to save up. I know it is a long time, but I think it is worth it to be the only owner on a cue of that caliber.

You know Ken, it is amasing that the ^ point cue pictured only cost $600 back in 1981/1982. What is it worth now Ken.

The 6 point is Burton's personal playing cue with a letter from Joel Hercek...
This adds considerable value..
The same cue is listed in the BBOC as a level 7 for $7500 without being his personal cue..

Same goes for the Moon cue out of Burton's personal collection.
A regular one is listed in the BBOC for $3500..

Burton's cues haven't appreciated like having a level 7 Szamboti or Balabushka, but the right ones can fetch some big numbers..
Burton had a tremendous impact on cuemaking and should be remembered as one of the true legends..

I acquired a Guffey made with a Spain 6 point blank, as well as the billet for the butt sleeve, and from what I was told, the shaft wood as well. Sounds like he just didn't assemble it. It is one of my keepers.

Many of John Guffeys six and eight point cues did have Burton Spain forearms. I have seen around five them in the last two years.
Now as far the butt sleeve and shaft blanks, I have never heard that before, in fact I would suspect that John made those himself.

One thing that is for certain though, Johns built some very nice cues, and I have never shot with one that did not hit a ton. If I were you I would keep that cue safe. John no longer makes cues or repairs the cues he made, if it ever gets damaged you will have to take it some where else for repair.

Have a good night!!!!!
