Ohh my wife is pissed!!

We are shopping for a new house right now since we sold ours in September, and she thinks that I wont look at any house that wont fit my table.

She's right, though I'll never fully admit it to her. We have seen some nice places, but the rec. room or bonus room just doesnt stack up for my pro-8!

She says I am buying a house around my pool table, and ya know what, she's right!

Nothing to be ashamed of. When you buy a house, it must be one that fits your lifestyle, and, by the sound of it, any house that doesn't fit your pool table wouldn't qualify. Of course, you need to be accommodating, too. If certain aspects of a house are fundamantal to your wife's ability to maintain her desired lifestyle, you must make a mximum effort to accommodate her.

Strange to say it, but my parents went through the same thing. When they shopped for a house in the late 60's, dad wanted a big basement (for a pool table), and mom wanted a big kitchen. Both got what they wanted.

Absolutely do this and fully admit it to her. Insist on it. Refuse to get a house without enough room. It will cause problems later. In fact, I think you should get a house that will hold a full size table in a comfortable room. We moved almost 2 years ago and I insisted on a house that would hold a pool table. We got one, and it allowed me to start playing again after a long layoff. So it is great. But I only have an 8' table. And we have disagreed about decorating it because I insist nothing can cut into playing space. Problem is, there isn't enough room.

Next house, my MINIMUM requirements of a gentleman's game room:

9' table. (Ideal is heated slate billiard table AND a 9')

At least one 42" or bigger plasma screen with all possible games/channels. (Ideal is at least 3 screens where multiple games can be watched)

Good sound system. Low high end audio/home theater. Won't spend more than around 10K I don't think. (Ideal is not affordable)

Wet bar with some wine storage. (Ideal is a full wine cellar nearby and some cigar storage) Lotta whisky is getting poured in that room.

Comfortable chairs.

I just need to tell my wife to get busy and pay for all this. :D

Being in the military we have to move every so often. We buy a house every time, my wife knows, my only requirement is to have a room for my table.

Put it this way, if she had a $4,000 couch, she'd want a living room for it. I've got a $4,000 table and I need a room for it. Katie and I have been married for almost 14 years, she's never been "pissed" because I want a room for something I love.

There's no way I would spend the money on something I wouldn't be happy with. You've got to live there to and your wife would hopefully understand that.

I agree with JDB, fully admit it to her and let it be known that there's no way in hell that you'll take an house that can't accomodate the table comfortably.
If she wants a big kitchen...let her have it...if she wants a big dining room let her have it. But don't give up the table and don't even argue about it.

I went through hell finding my last two homes that would fit a 9 footer with room to spare and that was the basic requirement that had to me met or no house. In about a year I'll be building a new home from scratch and I'm already sifting through floor plans and playing architect to get what we both want in the home and still keep it within a certain price range. She'll get what she wants, but I sure will also.

I've never understood the male mentality that acquiesces when it comes to having a pool table in the house or playing golf regularly. Once you allow that precedent to be set in the beginning or any time in a relationship, you are f*#ked for life and can never dig your way out. It's just a lifetime of groveling and begging. I know some guys that are so locked into servitude and have been potty trained so well by their wives that they have to go through ever loving hell every week just to go play golf one time. That's ridiculous! And it's THEIR fault for allowing it to happen in the first place.
Get the house that'll fit the table and let her know that the next 20 years are going to be different.

I have the best one of them all... When we were building our house this is how the construction went.

1. Framing

2. roofing and siding

3. Concrete

4. setting up pool table Pool Table (Diamond, of course)

5. Inviting all of his friends over in the cold weather, with torpedo heaters inside to play and to see just exactly how much room would be devoted to the pool area -v- family area.

6. Framing the family room/pool room around the length of the pool table.

7. The rest of the house.

We built the house around the pool table.

Eydie ~ who is still kicking Bob for making the pool room the largest room in the house.

When you get this all built. Can I move in with you?

Like has been said before, dont feel bad about not wanting a house that wont fit your table. You by a house to enjoy, and a big part of your enjoyment just happens to be pool. My wife already understands that when we look for a house, it will have a room big enough for my table, or we will build a room onto the house that she likes in order to take care of my neads :D

Hell man! This is your chance to move on up to the ole 4 1/2 X 9! I am with you man, when I finally get my place it is going to have to take a 9 foot, probably a gold crown. It takes a aweful big house though, some of the best setups I have seen have been a garage converted into a rec room with a bar neon signage, posters, the whole works. If the house does not fit the table but you have a fair chunk of land you can build a actual rec building for not a huge cost. If your wife thinks thats bad though, my neighbors at my old place bought a $1.8 million dollar house and then before moving in had a renovation add a european spa and a gymnasium for $600,000 that from the outside looks like the house. If you tell her about that your little pool room wont seem so bad.

To All Respondants

Thanks for the words of wisdom, I know some of you can co-empathize.

My wife and I have a persuasive little inter-marriage mental game going on about the whole pool table thing...It's more of a little joke, or tiff...between us.

Celtic, garage conversions=:D . I know a couple folks in the Seattle area that have converted detached garages into nice personal taverns. I think having a pool room detached from your main living space is ideal because of all the late night noises us pool players can make :)

My hope with the property that we currently have our ;) on is that we will be able to build enough short term sweat equity to re-fi and build the shop/gameroom of my dreams.

Cheers!

My new townhome was built around my golf schedule!! LOL

Very little yardwork, which I have hired someone else to do, not much snow shoveling either - which I should hire someone else to to as well. :D

The rub is I have only enough room for a 7 ft table, but that's ok cuz I play in a VNEA league on the bar tables anyway.

It took My wife and I two years to find a house she liked and a bonus room big enough for a nine footer. Looking back, I kind of wish We would have bought a smaller house and I would have built a whole seperate building out back for my "Game Room". That way I could play any time day or night and not bother Her or my new daughter. Also, If you are not the selfish type you could give a key to the "Game Room" to one of your best pool playing buddies.

Been there, done that ... and my wife also got a bit frustrated with me vetoing houses. However, once she understood how important the table was, she added the family room size to the initial screening criteria. It was very frustrating to her to look at a house, like it, but have the room too small. If she eliminated a candidate because the pool room was too small, we didn't go look at it, possibly saving wear and tear on our marriage.

We ended up buying a new house that was being built on spec. The layout of the room was a bit funny, but I spoke with the builder and we decided to move a post by 3 feet to make a much better floor plan (for the table). This ended up costing about $1000 more (fancy tech-lam beam instead of 2x12s), but both the wife and I got what we wanted. We're still there, still together, and very happy with the outcome (other than I haven't improved my pool game enough, but that's another story ...)

A friend reinforced a beam in his basement and removed one post entirely ! The point is that an unsuitable room MAY allow structural modifications to make it acceptable. A contractor could help with that.

Hang in there KC. Educate your wife as to the room requirements so she can effectively shop for houses. Once you are into a new house all will be forgotten (OK, the wife tells the "$1000 upgrade for the stupid pool table" now and then, but she's smiling when she does).

I was going to build a home around my table as well, it would have been mostly vinyl siding. That is untill I found my all brick home(a little smaller than the one that was going to get built) but still can fit my 9' table. One recommendation I will make is to be sure to get a room larger than what most table manufacturer's say will accomodate the table. One manufacturer I won't mention names says a finished room of 14'-2" wide is sufficient--No way. I would say at a minimum get 14'-9" from finished wall to finished wall. You then never need a "short stick" for trouble shots. In summary get a room with plenty of room with no obstructions. It takes a large room but is well worth it when it comes time to playing serious pool.
