buying antique table

I'm buying an unfinished antique table for less than $1000. By sacrificing aesthetics, I will be getting superior slate, cushions etc & save money. I hope to use my wife's video camera to catch my errors. It will be good to get away from the bar, loud music, silly teens, & smoke at the recreation center, & long drives to the city to play.

I'm sure that I will still be relying upon your sage & generous advice.

Some 'antique' rubber cushions have no life, just a dull thud with little rebound. I used to play on a friends 1910 Brunswick with the original rubber ... you could not go three rails (well, maybe King Kong or Ray Carter had a chance) and it was tough to play a reasonable game. He had the rubber replaced while recovering it, and it became about the fastest table I've played on  Kicking 5-rails-to-the-corner became a medium shot

Good luck with the table, it's an essential part of a true pool addicts home. And finish it, nothing like a lovely piece of wood furniture to add warmth to a room*.

Dave, *not Martha Stewart, never been to jail :D

Addiction seems to be the operative term. The game has so many levels! The table is a Madison. The transaction is an extremely rare situation in which I am making the purchase from a gentleman who values integrity, loves the game, has devoted his life to it, & is quite knowledgeable.

This game seems to attract a rare breed of human beings.

Take it from a long time table owner, getting away from the bar scene will be a positive thing for your game. You won't look back once you get that table home. Personally, I much prefer to play at home. Hope you get many hours of fun from the new furniture.:)

I have a Madison snooker table that I refinished. I love having it, even though it doesn't play perfect. Let me know if you have any questions. I have before and after pictures if you are interested.
