Buying unfinished cues

How do you guys/gals feel about buying or committing to buy cues that are unfinished. I see people listing cues in the Wanted/For Sale section that are "nearly finished" or "a week from ready" and they are taking orders for them.

Do people jump on this? I noticed that someone is offering pretty inexpensive cues, but they are a week from completion. Only offering this deal for a couple of days, just makes me suspect.

Seems like whenever this happens, people get whiffed. All of a sudden A week turns into many weeks, turns into months and before you know it, user is gone, no cues were sent and 10 people placed orders for a cue.

I sent the seller a message and told him that if he finished a cue and had one ready to ship, I'd buy it. I told him the offer is good through the end of the month, he finished a cue like the one I want and I'll buy it from him then. Is that considered out of the norm or being a dick about it? I don't like the feeling of not trusting people, but this site is full of this shit and I don't want to get whiffed.

I don't know how they play, but those cork wrapped cues look great for the price he's asking.

I just bought two "almost" finished cues and could not be happier.

I got a Lee Peppers from Lee and a Sugartree from Eric that had been abandoned by their commissioners.

I paid a fair price and got the Sugartree without waiting for five years.

The LP was the biggest surprise. I didn't expect much, but boy was I surprised. I will NEVER sell that thing.

They are two of my favorite cues and would recommend either cue to anyone.

The folks that have played with my LP have all asked for his contact info.

I haven't let anyone play with my ST yet.

If you're down in south Louisiana give me a shout.

As far as trust goes. AZ is pretty quick to spot the phonies. Their reputation on here is worth FAR more than a few hundred dollars.

The reason that some of these makers offer a week or two out is because they are giving you the last chance option of picking joint/pin type and perhaps weight options...before the clear goes on.

The typical player isn't necessarily used to seeing an unfinished cue, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it in my book.

As with anything, you have to trust the seller, and at maximum, I would send a deposit only. No reason to pay for the whole thing now if it's going to be ready in just two weeks, right?

Yeah, I would love to have one, but when I see someone trying to collect lots of upfront orders and trying to create a two - three week timespan before the first deliveries are late, I just get leary.

The guy sells exactly what I'm looking for, basically PJ's with great looking wood, but I don't want to get strung along for weeks and weeks and end up assed out in the end.

If the guy had been on here for 6 years and had 6,000 posts with 600 itrader feedback I wouldn't be worried. But, he has 4 itrader feedbacks, and 250ish posts. Just seems fishy to be trying to gather up all that upfront cash for unfinished cues.

Should I have offered a deposit? There has to be some kind of reasonable method other than send the money to some random person on the internet and hope a cue exists.

Sounds like you just described escrow to me. It's easy, and you are protected.

Escrow on an unfinished cue? I'll just wait and if he ever has one to sell that's finished I'll pick it up.

Seems like a good way to get a foot in the door selling cues to me. Just enough lead time for selection of specs without an eleven year wait.

As far as I can see that cue maker sold some cues in that effort. If one is too paranoid then sit it out. Wait for the reviews, then pay more once he is more established.

After having communicated with that cue maker myself I personally think he is a good guy, with good intentions, offering a great product.....but I have not sampled his work yet.

Personally, I would like one of his cues, and not PJ either. I want a steel jointed cue with points from him. I really do. When I have the cash I will order one.

He was actually selling cues before he was on AZB, and for more money than now AFAIK. I have been watching his progress. The only change is that he came on this forum. It's a hard audience. But he seems to be a gentleman and I am rooting for him. Then again, I am new here too. So.....I am simply anxious to see what people say when they get these cues. If I had the spare cash I would have ordered one already.
