C J Wiley

Self-stiffage. Not good juju.
They both would be extra nervous playing with an empty barrel. Then they would drive themselves nutser with both picking off dozens of pieces of invisible table lint before every shot. I wouldn't want to watch that match...

Tired old argument tbh. You can only play on what's around at the time. CJ would have played great if little pockets were the standard at the time. I've seen him in action and he shot as straight as any living human in his prime.

did CJ quit before the diamond era?

Maybe. It's just my impression anyways. Today's standard is quite a bit higher and its changed in 20 to 30 years. I don't think the players have physically evolved all that much in this time period. So what gives?

The gambling culture was driving pool in the U.S. and the Philippines way more than Professional pool was. I think that's flipped now. Just something to consider when evaluating players of past generations. Heck -- 9 ball was considered a gamblers game for years.

they all* have solid fundamentals. they're more jim rempe than ismael paez, and that style holds up better

* with like 3-4 exceptions

Efren beat CJ too. Once giving him 2 or 3 games on the wire.(correction) CJ won that. He wouldn’t play Efren even.
He's not stupid. In his prime CJ probably won more $$ gambling than 4-5 players one might name. He had good 'horses and they played people who would GO OFF if they got their nose open. He made enough to buy house and open two successful Dallas clubs. Not many made that kinda $$ or if they did they fk'd it off on horses/dope/pussy/whatever.

lol I heard the story from CJ himself On YouTube, But I can’t remember exactly how it went. I think he played Luat even and lost, then he played Efren getting 2 games, and I think he won. But you’re right, CJ is definitely up there with some of pools best when it came to gambling

the old archer could give the new archer the 8

for many pool is a "rhythm" game, pauses can be detrimental

earl, archer, cj, etc. are examples
to clarify: the archer that picked lint, played slow, etc., played the 8 ball weaker than the fast n loose archer shortly after changing his pace

i agree that the present day archer would be gambling with the 5 vs archer, "the kid"

I was in 2 different tournaments where CJ matched up with Earl. 94 95 ish. Saw it close up. CJ made Earl lose his mind both times. Kept his mouth shut and handled him. Sure looked like he shot pretty damn good to me.

I saw CJ play a gentleman from Louisiana, whom I did not recognize, something like three or four years ago. They played one pocket on one of those Diamond tables from the earlier generations of Diamonds. I don’t know what the size of the pockets was, but I can tell you those pockets were hypersensitive. They spat out balls that looked as if they had been made all the time. We have one of those tables in a local pool room. We call it “The Devil Table.”

I watched CJ and the other gentleman play for about three or four hours. CJ may have missed two balls he seriously intended to pocket during that time. The other player missed none.

I was impressed.

You gonna tell us who won?

Big pocket Brunswicks compared to today’s tournament tables- you could master most shots if you played enough pool with a good stroke and proper focus. Tough tables today are more challenging.
CJ played great on tough equipment. CJ's pool room had a 10 foot centennial with 4" pockets with Mali cloth. In his prime he could have roasted most of them, ESPECIALLY gambling.
