call your next pocket

so what do people think about playing 9ball/10ball this way? if it really caught on, maybe it could be our (US) version of what rotation was for PI. i have tried it a little, and REALLY like it, especially during practice. i do realize some funny things can happen with this format in a tournament, but hey, giving lesser players perhaps more opportunities at the table can't be too bad a thing for local tournaments.

We've played a variation of this in 8-ball at the club where I play most. At first the better guys were using it as a way of handicapping themselves when playing me. (When I was brand-new to the game, and really green.) I quickly decided I wanted to play that way as well; it really is fun, and makes you think.

Basically, our game is regular called-shot 8-ball. Before you shoot you have to call the next ball and pocket you will shoot after the ball you are on currently. If you miss, you reset your calls when you get back to the table, except for shooting on the 8. You still have to put the 8 in the pocket you called the first time you shot at it.

I imagine it would work much the same way and be as much fun in 9-ball, too.

Just a way to mix things up some. We haven't played that in a while, I think I might suggest it tonite if I get over there.

i love this game, this guy that plays in my pool room,we play even 9 ball,it drives me crazy he is out of line every other shot, but his shot making skills are much better than mine,he gets away with it alot.i ll tell you how strong this game is,i gave him the wild 8 playing call your next pocket, well lets just say he wont take the 7 at that game anymore,he never ran more than 4 balls, his qball was all over the place like always, when we play texas express rules i have my hands more then full with this guy.but this game you are talking about is the most skillfull way of playing 9 ball, the all around better player will win!

Yeah, I see great benefits to it. I think weaker players would progress faster playing this way. Perhaps much faster. Further, it may relieve some of the pressure on tournament directors' decisions to handicap and/or let strong players play. I think the weaker players would be happier just getting to the table more. I see positives all around, yet there could be arguments on the calling of the pocket of course, and it is a pain to call every time-- but I think the game is worth the trouble.

I like the concept and will play it next time for sure. It removes something that some complain about in nine ball and that is slop. I guess it could go three rails and still be slop and be good. Hell just make your current shot call pocket also. Problem with this format is it will be in favor of the higher skilled players who don't get out of line so much. And of course the number one reason it might not fly is IT AINT NINE BALL. It would have to be called Call Nine Ball or Next shot call nine ball. Part of the beauty and part of the craziness of Nine Ball is the anywhere, anytime thing. Thats why you need a little thicker skin to play nine ball. Its a brutal game.

I only ever play call your pocket for 8-ball and depending who I play I play the same way for 9-ball. I think it should be added to the tournament format, it shouldn't make a huge difference if your actually play position and not just letting the ball fly.
