I tried this some more, and the trick to keeping the cue ball on the table is to start nearer the cushion than I was trying. I managed to go straight into the side pocket once.

I think Tom was able to get it in about 5 tries. I remember doing it also, but it took me many more tries (about 10-15). Top-reverse English definitely made the shot easier by helping curve the CB back to the rail. As you point out, it also helped having the CB close to the rail.Regards,
