Calling Dr Dave. And Bob J. And Jay H - close cue ball shot

It seems like it would be too hard to call. If it is definitely undecidable, the call goes to the shooter. If you were refereeing a game and the shooter shot much harder than need be, would this change your call?

I was in a tournament as a new (visiting) player and the guy I was playing was known for his moves. In one close hit situation, he played the shot at break speed even though that made no sense for position. He claimed there was no way to see which ball was hit first, which was technically true. (The simple physics said it was a bad hit.) Fortunately, the room owner was watching and called the foul, so there was no more "earnest discussion."

For shots like the one in the video, sometimes you need the speed to avoid the foul. I think the cue ball had a better chance to jump up and out of the way with the extra speed.

The root problem is that top practicioners of this variety of pocket billiard game tend to use such shots way too often. Bet more than 90% of those are illegal hits.

90% is a lot of illegal hits, seems like they are no longer illegal?
The real number might be even close to 99%, I was just too cautious to say that :) There is a common habit to shoot these close shots in RusPyramid, as they come up pretty often around the rack area. And most often the referees don't say anything. Yet if we were to inspect closely, the aforementioned number would have appeared true.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in thus far, but still no Dr Dave around ;)

American rule used to be 'one continuous stroke' or something to that effect. That particular shot, there was sufficient angle and space to follow through so you could pre-approve the shot with a proviso that if it went, it had to be good. I've done that in 8 ball on bar tables. :ROFLMAO:
