BHQ, has always been honest, and told stories, and I totaly respect him for this, most try to cover up what they don't know in many different ways, some funny, some horribly misleading. COME ON GUYS, LETS TELL SOME GOOD ONES.

I'll Start,

I don't always speak up on every subject, but I think I know wood rather well, not down to there technical names, but most things about them, any way here it goes:

I've been chasing Pau Ferro for a couple of years now, every time I talk to a supplier about it, it's either there out, or have never heard of it? Well I finaly found some, place a big order just in case I have trouble finding more in the future, I get it in, Look at it, I go over to my wood supply and pull out some pieces of wood I got when I bought out another cuemaker like 4-5 years ago Same stuff, I'm disapointed, so I call the guy and tell him he must have sent me the wrong stuff, I said you sent me Morado, I ordered Pau Ferro. :speechless: needless to say it's the same damn wood, I've had some for years and didn't know about it.

So now I have some really nice pau ferro, super aged and ready to rock:thumbup:

Come one guys, we all have been there, lets hear your bone head moment.

there's too many to mention!!!! LOL

Damn, I did it again!

My latest was one that I've done before. I was setting up to take another taper cut on some cue butts I'm working on. I forgot to disconnect the carriage to run on the taper bar and was making a straight cut instead. Luckily, this time I caught my error quick enough and didn't ruin the first one by turning it into a dowel:eek:

I once was working on my lathe at a tournament and my brain was obviously overloaded. I reached into the pulley to change the belt speed from one pulley to the next. I have done that a thousand times. But this time the lathe was still on. It felt like someone hit my finger with a sledge hammer.

I believe that Murray posted a pic of a beautiful (well, it was...) cue he did this to.

This one was simple, and sure all have done it.
I was cleaning a shaft, I put the driver in the shaft, carefully chucked it up in the headstock, turning it by hand to make sure it was true. Got all my paper, cleaners, waxes laid out and turned the lathe on. Sounds ok right? The most important thing was to lock the tip end in the concave center before I turned the lathe on. All I can say is , WOW what a bang! Luckily it was one of mine this time, so needless to say, a new shaft was made!

I'm not a cue maker, hell i cant change a tip buuuutt......I did do the finger in the pully trick before and the knuckle in the bench grinder(still have the scars). I have alot of war stories and all my fingers(stone cold luck).

I will admit with all the equipement I have in the shop, the disc sander is the one I am the most afraid of! It shoots stuff and does a number on the fingertips.........

I have bought Marado and Pau Ferro and they definitely looked different to me. The Pau Ferro had a nice two color contrast and the Marado was kinda plain looking. So you got me to looking at the two woods on the net. The two woods are the same species category, but Marado comes from Bolivia and Pau Ferro comes from Brazil. I guess it is like getting Maple from the West Coast and East coast. They are different maples yet still maple.

.

This happened in the early days of my cue work. I just finished wrapping a cue and was getting set up to put some tips on and face some joints. When I wrap cues I have the lathe turning clockwise so the linen is winding over the top of the cue and I can see it.

I start on the tips and I am just not getting the right cut on the ferrule while facing it. I tried sharpening the cutter, changing the angle, changing the speed before I realize I have the lathe running the wrong direction. You automatically look around to see if anyone has seen the dumb move you just made.

My brother doesn't put the lathes back in forward when he's done, done this to a few tips myself, I gripe at him every time.

oee time i was bulidling a 4 pointer for myself and i engaded my taper bar but didnt lock my carrige down. so i un engaged my taper bar and locked my carrige down and made a pass. i always go as slow as possible so i turned my back for about a minute. (2 mins per pass roughly) i forgot to engage my taper bar so i had about a .850 straight taper about 15 inches down the cue. on the enitre forearm and half the handle

can you say PRO taper

Pau Ferro and Morado are just different names/alias' given to Bolivian Rosewood. Hope this helps.
Regards.

I have done a few things mentioned here already, like the sander and grinder stories. Actually done that more then a few times, and lost the tips of My finger and nail, luckily they grew back over time. One time I was working with one of the larger handgrinders. Someone had given it to me because the t- handle was broken off and you had to just grab the thing around the body to use It, and for some reason I had My thumb hanging over, and pressed It right into the grinding disc, It was one of the really coarse ones too. I barely touched It, and backed off very quickly, but It had already taken the tip of My thumb and nail down to the tip of the bone. That may be why it was given to me in the first place:thumbup:

I did have a recent "things that make You go Duhhhh" moment. I was cutting some pockets for billet strips, had the piece mounted in the lathe. I can just disengage the indexing when ever I want, so I have a habit of doing that and kicking the lathe over every once in a while just to eyeball it ,to make sure My piece is still running true in the lathe, and nothing got knocked out of wack.
I Usually check the slots for fit by dry fitting the strips periodically, what I don't usually do is kick the lathe over while I have them in there, but I had all the slots filled, and sure enough I kicked the lathe over. They stayed in place for a second, long enough for me to stick My face down there to look, then It started spitting strips all over the room, but several hit me in the face first:o I was lucky because I wasn't wearing eye protection, but the only thing hurt was My ego if anything. Well, actually It didn't even hurt that, But I got a good laugh at Myself out of It. Took me alittle while to relocate all the strips from the knooks and crannies of My small shop.

I ran out of linen the other day two inches from being done. I pulled it all off and grabed another partial spool and did the same thing all over again except the second time I was only an inch short.

The following day I was putting a leather wrap on and had a razor blade monted in my tool post. I reached to work the seam and ran my arm along the blade.

oops

i was cutting out my last inlay of about 30 inlays. everything was great until in forgot to zero the machine. needless to say it drove in so far and fast that it had a real nice burn and hole in it of the router head. all that time destroyed in one second.
