Can a Gandy be made to play like a Gold Crown or Diamond?

I have a friend who owns a Gandy... probably 20 years old.. a big G as I remember. I think it has really thick slate.

Anyway.. He wants to upgrade and has asked me if his table will play "like" a Gold Crown or a Diamond if he has new cushions and cloth installed. I don't know so opinions are solicited.

Then the next trick would be to find a good mechanic in the Galesburg/Peoria/Quad Cities area. Any suggestions?

IMO you should tell him that top shelf cushions and cloth should make his Gandy play much better.
If that's not good enough, sell the Gandy and buy a D or GC.

I have one that was rebuilt using Brunswick rubber. Had the rails extended giving me 4.5" pockets. Recovered with Simonis 860. It plays as well or better than any Gold Crown in the local pool rooms. A lot will depend on the mechanic rebuilding it. Mine is one of the best.

Thanks. That's what he wants to do and I told him I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work just fine.

What brand and profile cushions should he look for? .

Depending upon the model, they will play jam up. If it's still the same pinned slate that we had on all of ours, the frame was rock solid, and they had Reybestos rubber.
Tighten the pockets, put on Artmeis, you got a keeper.
It may not be a Diamond, but it won't be a disappoinment either-

Mine are Brunswick Super Speed. Not sure on the profile, however they are right on spec as far as nose height from table surface.

If the price is right, I can even make it look just like a Diamond when I'm done working on it;)
