Can non-pool players ever undersrtand me???

Perspective of your poolplaying (if you dont play pool for a living) is the key, IMO. If you can find a happy medium with pool and your personal life and objectives, thats where you can get the MOST out of your game.
I have always believed, "If all your duckies are in a row in your personal life, then great pool always follows."
And just maybe, your wife will be happy too.:)

I have to say that since getting into Pool in the USA I can see a difference with the way non-Pool players look at Pool players, as opposed to players of other sports like Tennis, Golf, etc. The reason for this I feel is that there is such little exposure to the true Professional players of Pool. (Hmm, that sounds like a good name for a player's organization!)

In the UK where I hail from you don't have a problem pointing at a professional Snooker player and discussing this because most people there have been exposed to the sport and respect the players of it. However other than maybe watching "The Color Of Money" the average American is unlikely to have ever spent more than 10 minutes when flipping through ESPN watching Pro Pool. In contrast they are very likely to have watched at least a few professional Tennis or Golf tournaments.

Almost every friend I've played with casually with has accused me of being a Pro the moment I make three balls in a row. In contrast no-one would accuse me of being a Pro Tennis player because I could hit three ground returns in a row. No-one would think twice if you told them you'd enrolled in lessons with the local Tennis Pro, or joined a Golf Club. No-one would look at a Tennis pro and not assume they spent a large amount of their time training, practicing and working out.

But it's much harder to explain this when it comes to Pool because it is tough to cross this huge gulf in their experience with the sport compared with ours.
 
AuntyDan, along the lines of what you are saying it goes farther than that. Not only is pool hardly ever watched on TV by the non-playing public, but the professional sport gets no coverage in the media period. Nothing on the sportcasts, even the Sunday sports final shows. Nor do tournament results or rankings get any coverage in the newspapers either. Even on ESPN, which televises some tournaments (maybe none live), I've never seen them cover tournament results on Sports Center.

It is also not played at the junior level in any meaningful way (yes in Boy's Clubs but with very little in the way of tournament play) and none at all in the schools.
 
i dont know what it is but for some reason there is a strange satisfaction about seeing an object ball fall off the slate into the pocket!

...and there's the rub. If we, as addicts can bring to life the things mentioned in the above post, than maybe we will have a future in pool and cue sports in general. It takes all of us to support our addiction...
