Can someone make me these ferrules?

Hey guys, i'm looking for some black ferrules like in the pictures. the thicker ferrule on the left is a standard black phenolic but what im looking for is for the two ferrules on the right. the thinner shaft is what i normally use and the ferrule hits great. i took a pic of it next to the phenolic shaft ferrule to give a comparison as to the difference in looks of the two. i also took pics of what the ferrule itself looks like before it's put on.

i had someone make these black ferrules for me but he ran out of material and im looking for more. They're not just black phenolic ferrules, to me it seems more like a linen weave. i think he used the pheonlic material that u would make a joint or buttcap out of (not the break cue material) and he just cut it down to the size of a ferrule. i know that wastes a lot of material but it's what im looking for. if anyone has these or can make these for me, please let me know. pm me or something.

as u can see in the pics, the ferrules i'm looking for have a tighter weave than a standard black phenolic ferrule. plus it hits softer.

The last pic shows it best, the thicker phenolic ferrule seems to have a bigger weave whereas the thinner shaft has a thin tight weave thats a lot harder to see...if that makes any sense. but that's what im looking for.

i think it's a linen weave, the type used for joints and buttcaps.

One is canvas weave and the other is linen weave. It's available from Atlas and it's not all that expensive.
In all honesty though, I really don't know that anyone could determine a diff of hit. What you think might be attributable to the phenolic mtrl. may just as easily be the diff. in the woods of the two shafts. Either way, good luck.

Yes, the linen is softer, and the canvas is harder. I personally don't like the linen, especially for breaking.

I got some of the stuff you're looking for, if you PM me your address, I can send you a couple.

Amazing that someone can patent (the use of a one piece tip/ferrule). Is this really a new idea?
To capitalize on cornering the market, is done all the time in the US but it's hard to believe sometimes.

There is a well known fly fisherman that put a patent on tying a type of fishing fly that had been around for decades..... go figure???

Just saying:shrug:

That is exactly what happened in this case. Makers and repairmen had been doing it for some time and then Mike Gulyassy got a patent and has tried to stop others from using them. As you can plainly see there are still many, many brands of cues using them. Having a patent and having the resources to protect it are two different things. Threats and bluster may stop a repairman at a tournament from installing one but but threats are only good if the patent holder follows through.

I believe in patents and the rights of the patent holder to protect his original product or idea but I don't believe a person should be able to get or enforce a patent for an idea that was not his but common knowledge. Just my 2 cents worth.

This patent is worthless!

rhncue is right that he cannot enforce it, but after reading it, I don't think he has ever even made a ferrule that fits his own patent.

Somebody really knows how to waste money!

Not to digress, but it was recently reported somewhere here on AZ that a manufacturer has a patent on carbon fiber cored shafts - seems equally incredulous to me that they can patent a wooden stick with a hole drilled in it and filled with another black stick.

But the lawyers make a lot of money on this stuff, I guess.

My 2 cents

I'm not disagreeing that the patent is there or even that the patent holder might have thought it his original idea. Just wondered why it was allowed to become a law, which it now is, if it can be enforced or not. If some guy wants to throw a lot of money at it, it seems like anything is possible, since there was no other patent on it before.

Joe taxpayer would pay a lot less to the patent office if this sort of thing didn't happen. But then again if the patent holder tries to enforce it, the guilty party can get a court appointed lawyer on our dime to help him out.......RANT:deadhorse:

OP.....SORRY FOR HIGHJACKING THE THREAD, this is the last post from me on this subject. I hope you find what you need.

I don't believe you can get a court appointed lawyer for a civil suit. Your on your own dime.

I guess the above wasn't my last post.

My bad....

I was in RANT mode...
Who knows what I may say.
I've not had trouble in the past... but who knows what's ahead.
My computer crashed last week and I hadn't done a back-up for a while so I lost a lot of info.
Just got it back today with a clean slate. It sure looks barren. I'm a bit grumpy.
I was a lurker quite a while before I became a member so I feel like I know (at least as much as you can on a forum) you all a bit more than you might think,

Love Ya guys (my second family).

The only patent I have seen for the carbon core was abandoned before the patent was issued. For good reason, I might ad, as there were many things in that patent application that were in question.

The patent office doesn't really make sure a patent is for a good idea, or if it can even be made. There are thousands of patents that have little or no value. I am sure they all seemed like good ideas to the inventor, but time tells all.

If someone claims to the the originator of an idea, and later it is determined that they weren't and knew it they could be in serious trouble. Patent law can be very tough.

good stuff i hope i dont get sued for the break shaft lol. it was just an extra break shaft that came like that when i bought it. my regular break shaft has a leather tip. i have only used that phenolic shaft maybe twice in the past year.

You cannot in small claims. However, patent and copyright suits are a bit different and can run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

IIRC, the gentleman who was/is on the label for Tasters Choice received an enormous settlement. Seems ten or so years went by before he discovered they used his photo. He never drank the stuff and it was brought to his attention by a friend. Apparently he never signed a release. It is illegal to use someones photo for gain without permission.

A bit different, but you get the idea.

Copyright infringment is 100,000 per incident I believe

LOL..he received 15.6 million dollars... guess he saw himself while in a store...

That's all nice but what has that to do about the court giving the parties involved a lawyer for free?

This is not always the case. Around 1910, a Mr. Kettering invented the automobile self starter and it was first used in a Cadillac. He then franchised the technology to other auto man.. Henry Ford refused to pay these fees and used the technology to put self starters on Ford products. Delco, who was the company that Kettering was associated with, sued Ford for Patent infringement. This suit stayed in the courts for many years and both companies spent millions of dollars in legal fees. When all was said and done, Delco won the suit and Ford had to pay Delco for the infringement for all of the years the patent had been in place. The award was one dollar.
