I'm only asking this because it's rare nowadays(at least from what I've seen) in pro 9 ball where there are situations where you will ever see a slop shot go down. Everyone just plays position so well in this game.

Would changing it to call shot/call safe really have that much of an effect? Or has it just been too much of the norm for so many years that there will never be a change from what it is?

They play call shot/call safe in a lot of the Predator tournaments in the Northeast. I see it on the streams. Personally, I dont care for it.

personally not a fan of call safe. takes some of the action out of the game imo. you see a lot of guys take on tougher shots when they can play a two way shot. call safe takes a skill out of the game.

It's exactly because slop is rare at pro level. But when it happens, it's usually critical and a big upset. So yes, it will have much of an effect, at least emotionally.

That's what 10 ball is for.

I laugh whenever someone says the difference between 9-ball and 10-ball is that 9-ball can have slop but not 10-ball.

No. The main difference is the break. Then they just add the call shot on top of that. There is nothing intrinsic about 9-ball that stops you from playing call shot. I

Call shot? Yes.

Call safety? No. The rule should be, you don't need to call safety, but your opponent can pass it back to you if (and only if) you pocket the lowest numbered ball but you didn't call that. This greatly reduces the awkward situation of pass back due to simply missed shot. Just think about it.

They tried it on a local tour with a few pros and semipros, and it slowed down the game and seemed to make it less enjoyable for everyone involved, especially spectators. Guys would try entertaining tough shots, and be forced to kick, and started getting scared of those shots.

It didn't seem to remove luck from the game, it just transfers that luck from the shooter to the guy in the chair, who can force someone to kick without having done anything intelligent or well-executed.

I guess you could argue that when a shooter gets safe, he (often) didn't do anything intelligent or well-executed either... but in either case, the bottom line is someone is kicking and nobody had make any special effort to cause that.

That doesn't feel like an improvement, only a change.
