Can you believe I found a 4.3 ounce Predator 314 shaft?

I posted a thread about LD shafts and how some people seem to be indifferent to the fact that many LD shafts are significantly lighter than the original shaft that is being replaced. I have a Joss that has a heavy (4.3 oz.) shaft and wondered if there were any Predator shafts this heavy. I had posted threads on the Wanted/For Sale forum with no luck and had tried several sources, thinking I might have to see if one of those FAT shafts would be near 4.3 oz. in weight. Tonight I got an email from Greg at Billiard Warehouse as follows:

Hi Bill,

You are in luck on the 314-2 5/16 x 14 shaft. I have the shaft in stock at 4.3 oz! I have a 314-2 Radial pin shaft that is 3.8 oz. The 314 FAT Radial Pin shaft I have in stock weighs much less.

I have already PayPaled them the payment. I just wanted to hand out a little praise to Greg and Billiard Warehouse for the prompt reply to my request.

Maybe the 5/16-14 pred shaft is 4.3 oz because of the brass insert? Same for the Uni loc one.

Would that really make the shaft hit better? maybe without the brass insert it is a 3.3 oz shaft?

they want the weight for balance purposes. and yes the brass makes it weigh more, i forgot how much exactly, but I had to choose either more forward weight with brass insert or a high contact-area wood to wood radial. I went with the radial

I'm not too sure about that. I have another 314-2 shaft with the same length, joint and tip diameter, but it weighs 0.5 ounces less than my 4.4. Since the amount of glue used for the splices would probably be very close to each other, wood density would be the next choice to explain the difference in weight... theoretically

I've bought many partials (no brass) that were over 4oz. They seem to be the darker colored shafts. If you see a nice honey colored partial 314 then its a good guess its over 4oz. The same shaft in bright white...close to an ounce less.

Great find Bill, but keep in mind that really means that without the Brass Insert it would actually weigh 3.9 oz, because the insert weighs .4 tenths of an Oz.

Still considering that is still pretty good.

Take Care Bill

Apparently they are not too common

This email from Greg regarding the 4.3 oz. shaft makes me think they are not too common.

Hi Bill,

I was shocked that I had one that heavy! Do you want both shafts or just the 5/16 x 14?

Yours truly,

Greg Savoie

This was a very interesting thread bill. I have certainly noticed the difference in shaft weight when changing my 314's to other cues but never gave it much thought as the weight to an extent is not a major concern to me. I am gonna have my shafts weighed now to see just what they actually do weigh out of curiosity.

I have bought several items from Greg at Billiard Warehouse. Always great service & a very personable guy. I would recomend his site at the top of my list to anyone.

As craig said the insert weighs in at about .5oz. So 3.9 is pretty good for a 12.75mm shaft with a long taper. If when you buy them you ask for the heaviest one you won't have that hard of a time finding one

And yes it makes alot of difference. That play better IMO.

Good find tho bill you have good firewood.
