can you do anything for a warped piece of slate?

If there is some question as to whether the guy is a pro in general, wouldn't it be even worse with a Kim Steel table?

I don't know jack about setting up pool tables but I thought Kim Steel tables had a whole different (meaning complicated) leveling system.

I only heard that because a mechanic who worked locally mentioned that (while laughing) but said he hammered in shims to level it anyway.

when they guy came back to work on it, he just reached up under there with a socket wrench and adjusted the slate while the felt it on top, he was worried he would break the bead where he joined the slates together with bees wax.

id never heard anything bad about kim steeles, but id be interested to hear what the opinions of them are (im a big boy i can take it lol). I always liked how they played, i always put them slightly behind the diamond but in front of the gold crowns.

the guy i bought the table from has closed down his room and he has a whole garage full of tables and slates, im really thinking about pressing him to give me a new piece when i have it recovered, just for the piece of mind.

Kim Steel tables have their design problems like most other tables, only most other tables don't have metal top rails, or little wooden strips to staple the cloth to. It's an alright table, it just has a short life span, that's all. They did have some good ideas, I just don't think they did much research behind them ideas before they started selling their tables;)

I second that...you have to see it, to believe it...

I'am using Glen's system of pulling the cloth, with the measuring and marking, but I can't pull it as tight since I'm stapling, it's still pretty tight but not mind blowing tight. You won't believe how tight he gets it until you've seen it for yourself. When I saw him marking the cloth I said to myself, Yeah right, but in a few minutes I was pulling the cloth myself. I have to say, I'm a 200 lbs guy and I was pulling the cloth so hard my body was sliding on the garage floor toward the pool table.

Doesn't Simonis recommended 2.5 inches of pull/stretch? So, does that mean Glen is pulling it farther than that?

I never seen or heard of any recommendation from Simonis. Is that recommendation you saw from side to side or end to end or both? And also not mentioned before but we use Tour Edition cloth and if I remember correctly we stretched it 5.5 inches from side to side. You will have to ask Glen what the stretch is for Simonis, but I think it is around 2.5 inches also the size of the table will make a different as well.

I wasn't dogging Kim Steel tables at all. Buddy Hall said on a one pocket match (Roanoke 1995?) that the Kim Steel tables set up for that tournement played as well as any table he'd played on.

I'd always heard they were solid tables, but I guess they didn't hold up too well in the long run.

How does the levelling system from that table differ from a GC? I thought they had a complicated system with screws or something that meant factory trained installers were almost necessary. Am I wrong in thinking most european billiards tables (chevillote, verhoeven) are also this way?

Thanks for your input; I've learned a lot from your posts and appreciate how much you've shared with the forum.

I have a different way of installing bed cloth when compared to anyone else. It took me about a year to perfect it, and I use that way to install all the bed cloths that I install. Unless someone learns from me personally, or through my up coming DVDs, I don't believe there's anyone that can copy what I do;) with out first seeing it. I learned a long time ago, that bed cloth tightness has an effect on ball speed, and if the cloth isn't the same tightness on 10 tables in the same room, then you're going to have tables with different speeds, so I developed a way of measuring that tightness, no matter what kind of cloth I'm installing, it's always installed at the max of stretch, and can be installed the exact way every-time, on every table:D

Inquiring minds want to know -
1. Do you play anywhere other then then on your own table?
2. If so, do the other tables play exactly the same.

Before, my table played like $h!t. It's a completely different playing table now, for the better...

No doubt.
New cushions, cloth and a proper setup typically help any table play much better.
I just have some issues with what seems to be an obsession with tighter pockets when reading some of the posts in this forum.
