Can't stand to watch "bangers" play anymore?

Don't knock bangers!

They are the only reason there are any billiard parlors still in existence. They account for a vast majority of pool time, cue sales, liquor sales, tournament money and everything else. Bangers give me more money and less headache 7 days a week. I wish there were more bangers in the world. A lot more. Next time a banger wants to play you because you can run more than 2 balls, play him. It may be YOUR favorite pool hall you will keep in business.

BB... Although I don't consider myself a Banger, I am just learning the game. I worry so much about where the CB is going to end up - that I will blow an easy shot. I appreciate the help some of the better players have started to give me - once they realized I was taking the game seriously, or at least feel I have a little bit of respect for the game. It's these mentors I have that will make sure I don't become a Banger. And I'm grateful to them for that.

Sounds like you have tried to be a mentor. I read where you brought a book in for the patron/bangers to read. It was a great try, but you can lead a horse to water, but... Well, you know.

Actually I'm most likely too old to be a Banger anyway.:D

Winner's Circle Network with Lou Tice - 3/27/06 - "Mentors"

What is a mentor? What is that mentors do? Can having a mentor help you
succeed? Today we're going to be answering these questions.

These days, there are many sophisticated tools available to help those who
want to be successful. But one of the most valuable assets anyone can have
is also one of the oldest. I'm talking about a mentor - someone who can help
you learn the ropes, find your way around obstacles, and chart a course that
will get you where you want to go.

Just about every successful person I've ever met, whether they are in
business or one of the professions, sports, the arts, or any other field of
endeavor, has had the benefit of at least one mentor. Very often, they've
had many more than that.

Mentors are people who have achieved success themselves and want to pass
along what they've learned to others. They don't usually tell you what to
do - that's not their role - but they do help you weigh your options and
think through decisions.

Who are you mentoring and who is mentoring you?

If BANGER bother you IGNOR em... We got a bunch of OLD BANGERS where I play, they are having their own brand of fun, and hurting no one...

I absolutely hate watching bangers shoot... that's why I close my eyes on every shot!

Too much to read but by Bangers I assume you mean an SL6 or lower, right?

These are the players you should be winning money off of to enable you to play the better players.

BB, you are missing it completely. As an instructor, I work with all levels of players from pure beginners to pros. Regardless of the skill level, I usually learn something from every student I work with. Your post makes you sound like a bit of a snob. Unless you never miss a shot, you still have plenty to learn. Don't look down on someone who may not make as many shots as you do. You can always learn something new if you are willing and open minded.

I can understand why BB does not appreciate watching "bsngers". Being a beginner myself, I need to watch the consistancey of an experienced player in order to learn. IMO, a "banger" ussualy does not have any. A high level player can look at a "banger" and see extordinary shots, safties, ext. Shots I do not need to be concerned with if I can not make a straight in shot consistanly. I am not judging the "bangers". I just can not learn anything from them at this point. And I do not find them all that entertaining to watch. LOL.

i stink so i can appreciate them....

but on a different note, i appreciate most all pool players regardless of how they shoot... players don't have to be world beaters to be respected...

now if you are referring to the way they beat on the tables, that can be annoying, like when they tap the spot with the cue ball and then 2 days later your trying to rack and the 1 keeps sliding off the spot... thats definitely something annoying about them....

I've only read the title of this thread, so I'm sure there are lot's of arguments that agree with hating to watch bangers, as well as there lot's of arguments asking to "give these poor guys a break."
I started out, (as we all did) as a banger in a little one table bar in a small town in Colorado. I was probably the only kid in town that could string 3 balls together and shoot fairly straight. I was the kid that everybody was told to "stay away from" when playing 8 ball. Yet, at the time, I had no idea what follow, draw, right or left meant. I could just shoot pretty straight, which meant everything I did was to pocket balls, and let the cb take the natural tangent, and if I came up with another shot, I was lucky. I thought I was God!!
When I moved to Japan 16 years ago, I was in a very nice club with my first exposure to the big tables, and was my old self..................God. Until the house pro took attention, and started to show me just how much I didn't know, and just how good I wasn't. He then took me under his wing, and after about 3 years of his guidance, I now have game, play in pro am open events, and have beaten several pros straight up.
I have always felt great appreciation for the pro that took this banger under his wing, and showed me how to play. Had he been the type that "hates to watch bangers" and sent me to some lone corner table of the room every time I came into the place, I'd still be a banger today. So let's hear it for the bangers. In my opinion, they're all potential players. Some will grow, and some will blow away, but the one thing they all have in common is the fact that they all play at a level right now that I, and every other player in the world has at one time started from.
(but......................bangers with attitude, and that think they have game need to be robbed of every last dime they own!!)

Thanks Dave that was a great story! It tips the scales for bangers as far as I'm concerned!

Sure I can watch bangers and I'm just dying to show them something. But I hate soliciting my opinions without they're asking. I break down everthing in thier game and just hope they say, "How would you do this?"

There are "people who hate bangers" and then there are "people who hate bangers and choose to do something about making them non-bangers". :P

Yes, that's it exactly. I watch the better players in my area play, and many times they run out perfectly right.

Their choice of shot, the way they hit the cue ball is the thing.

So I can watch as they play and see they are going to hit a certain ball and watch how they hit the cue ball. And then see where the cue ball goes after the shot. It goes exactly where it should for the next shot. Many times now I am following right along with them - thinking they should shoot a certain shot a certain way. And they do this.

But other times they do something I would not have thought of. And it is a brilliant shot. Something new to me. I am learning by watching them play.

So I feel I need this at this point in my playing. To be around and watch players better than myself show me how to do it right.

When playing the better players, I may be losing, losing, losing. But I'm also learning, learning, learning.

people ask me all the time,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,how do I do this ?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and they are trying an impossible shot, whereas they could just shoot the ball in the hole with top. that outta be easy enough. but they see Scotty play and think they will try. yeah he hangs out at the same two table bar I do when hes in town. kinda funny the looks on peoples faces when a real player runs out over and over. Somehow he beats them to death and makes em like it.

Panning for gold

I'm an old guy. Can't afford your sticks. Can't beat any of you at pool. But patience , patience. At this wonderful bar you found full of pidgeons , pick out the best of the worst (he has the money), put him in your little black book, and stalk him until the time is right. Then take his money. Doesn't matter whether it's $10.00 or $100.00. There is more fun to this game than making balls. I never give advice. Shoot it the way you want.

I'm being told by AZ that my message is ten characters too short. But it's probably to damn long.

I hate watching bangers too but the thing you have to remember is that they are all pool players just like us and because their positional play may not be up to standard does not mean that we should be allowed to make fun of them, I for one am glad to give out advice to any player who asks for it for instance here is something that happened to me last week at my poolhall:

Someone came up to me and politely asked me about my break shot and how I got the cb to squat after hitting the 1 ball so I explained it to him and then within 10 minutes he was doing it himself and making balls on the break.

That my friends is the sort of things we should be encouraging in our local pool halls instead of laughing at the lower level players.

That is a great thing to read on here. I wish more good players would help out the bangers so that they can enjoy the game more. I am VERY lucky that I have a LOT of regulars that will do this. I have a reputation of giving them free pool if they help out the young kids just starting. They give them some pointers, I give them a free soda, some pizza, or free pool pass they can use later. Some young kids have taken to Snooker and 3 Cushion after being taught what those "funny looking" tables were. I wish more billiard parlor owners would do this. It takes a while but it does help you in the long run.

That's a great suggestion. I'm going to mention it to a friend who owns a pool hall and see what he says. He's a very smart fellow... I bet he puts it into practice.
