Capelle's Straight pool....

I am posting this thread as a plug for Phillip Capelle's book on straight pool. I began playing straight pool last summer and after 1 month my high run was 36. Within one week of reading the book, and considering aspects of the game that I previously had no concept of, my high run is now 43. More importantly my average has risen 10 balls. To the skeptics: yes the run was done on a 8 foot table, but no I did not fudge at all.

Some readers have criticized his book as being too wordy and long. However, I think the information in the book would help you reach a 100 alot faster than learning by trial and error.

all how-to books are generalizations because they must feed the masses. one book ends up reading like any other. simple fact is,,,there's just not much available on 14.1,,,,,or ANY pool game for that matter.

if there was really a desire, we could get a thread started here at AZ,,,,in fact we did but the topic has waned, because there are solid 14.1 players here, and you'd have the benefit of several points of views. you'd get a "3-d" perspective of the game, which is better than any one book could resolve.

MN,
I couldn't agree with you more. There is no book even close in complexity and scope (of course that is not the same as saying it covers EVERYTHING).

I do not find it wordy at all, I enjoyed the style immensely. In my view there is NO SUCH THING as being too wordy when discussing straight pool. I was fortunate enough to have a recent 8 hour straight pool session with a former #1 in the world, who spent about 10 minutes vigorously discussing why outside English was the appropriate choice for a break shot I had butchered. This would have taken about 10 pages in a book, but I enjoyed every minute of it (even though my inadequacy was the subject of the rant). If you like "brief" then you get Jonathan Livingston Seagull. If you like wordy you get Moby Dick. Its a matter of taste.

the chapter on safety play alone is worth the price of the book

also Babe Cranfield's The Straight Pool Bile is excellent and concise

This book is the best 14.1 book available. You are guaranteed to improve your high run if you read this book.
