I actually started a thread of a Yang Case that he is building for Pete Tonkin with the theme Carp Into Dragon. However i feel that this Carbon Fiber Tubes deserves a thread of it's own, i'm not sure if this is a first for Cue Case but it's definitely a first for Yang and i commissioned him to do it for Pete's case. Infact all my future cases with Yang will only have Carbon Fiber tubes.

Great Protection or Marketing Gimmick?

I think it's hard to argue with the protection that these tubes will provide.

It's awesome to see other case makers trying new ideas out!
I see two benefits of carbon fiber tubes vs. pvc or abs: Strength & Weight

The only downside I see, is cost. However, it seems like by the time someone is forking out the cash for a Yang case, carbon fiber is just lagniappe!

I think its a great addition to case making.

Very cool........:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Now if I could just figure out how to get one of those cases :)

I am waiting for an oval carbon outer tube case with a padded cloth interior.

Yang will probably be the one to do it. We can't afford to make them.

From my experiences with Carbon Fiber, through various suppliers, it can get pricey!

Carbon fiber is molded and "baked" into it's final form, so to get outer case tubes made, there would be a big initial investment for the forms to be made. Then tack on the additional high material cost. The tubes that Yang used are commercially available to anyone, albeit still very expensive.

That's been exactly my findings as well.

I've had it with all this case protection hype, and nonsense!!
Here's my new mode of protection... :D

That one would be kind of hard to carry around the pool room.

Anyway protection is all just "hype" until you have a broken cue. I personally don't understand what the issue is.

In every other hobby, sport, and industry it's fully accepted that the highest levels of protection are those with toughest shells and padded compartments. There is no argument, no one says it's hype. AND no one downplays the need for protection for expensive gear in other fields that I have seen.

No one says protection is overrated or tries mightily to justify less protection and make pretty but inadequately protective cases palatable. In other industries and hobbies the people who matter don't bullshit about it. They simply acknowledge that more protection is better.

Only in pool have I seen this idea that talking about protection is hype.

However many don't realize that some of the great brands in pool used PROTECTION as the cornerstone of their advertising. Fellini and Porper especially.

So respectfully, while you might have meant to be funny, I think whenever someone spends hundreds and thousands on their cues they should be offered the highest protection that it's practical and possible to build.

Now, I think that the tubes Yang has used here are stronger than pvc tubes. POssibly lighter, I don't know until I have some to compare. What I don't like is the apparent lack of padding. While the tubes are more resistant to impact and crushing force I happen to feel that the larger danger to cues is the vibration caused by the cues oscillating and banging against the sides in an unpadded case. And of course I feel that cue retention is highly important to prevent cues from falling out accidentally.

To me these two aspects are far more important and should be addressed in any case.

This is how I solve it.

This case could be inverted and the cues will not come out. The tubes and the sides of the shell are padded.

If Yang's case addresses this then I find that coupled with the use of carbon fiber to be an excellent solution for protection.

Is it for real or hype?

Depending on the application it is being used for.

For a cue case? Yes, it is overboard.

I have three cues that each cost me a minimum $1000. That much money does not come to me easily. I had to save up for it each time. You can call it overboard all you want, but I'll rest easier knowing the product of the time and money I invested is well protected.

How much for just the tubes? Like 3x6 worth of them?

I doubt those tubes are pure carbon fiber. It looks more like the vinyl wrap stuff. Pure carbon fiber in that amount would be in the thousands. A 1x1 case would be in the thousands just because of the carbon fiber

You can get real cf tubes like these commercially.

This site for example sells all sizes.

To get enough for a 2x4 would be around $350ish depending on the exact type chosen.

In China it will be cheaper but still expensive.
