Care for Oil Finish

I now have a cue with a hand rubbed oil finish. I have never had one before and I am not sure how to care for it. I have seen threads on how to apply the oil finish but not on how to maintain it.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to clean and care for the oil finish.

I highly recommend this product. Theres enuff in this small bottle to last you 10 lifetimes.

I stripped the clear from an old Duff snooker cue and applied Dr. Woodwell.
It came out beautiful.

I used Hightowers shaft wax to polish it, altho I probably didn't need to use it. Woodwell polishes up great with a soft cloth.

You might try Murphys Oil Soap as well. More readily available and cheaper.
Woodwell is approx $15. Read the directions first on Murphy's. If you can use it on antique and expensive furniture, I don't see a probelm with a oil rubbed cue.

Anyone have a suggestion for some over the counter products? Like Liquid Gold?

First, do you know what oil the cue was finished with.

If it was linseed, like British snooker cues, you use linseed.

For Tung oil, use more Tung oil.

Maintaining is just like doing the original finish, only not so much.

If it is linseed, you will need to re-do the finish more often than
for Tung oil.

As a side note - there are several "xxx Oil" finishes that are applied
by hand that 'mimick' an oil finish, but are actually a wiping varnish.

I had Mike build me a snooker cue jast year and it is hands down the best feeling cue I've ever had. This is the stuff he uses on his cues and they only need to be rubbed in occasionally, let dry overnite, then hand rubbed with a clean dry cloth, I'm told, but I have not yet seen any reason to do it on my snooker cue yet.

I don't know what the secret is in his secret formula, but the
proceedure he describes is exactly what one does for pure linseed oil.

To the OP - you should not use Boiled Linseed Oil for this method.

I used a simple furniture stuff with orange oil inside, it works just fine. Smells good too :)
