Caring for a layered tip

So the last time i went to Joss for a new tip i told Dan i'd like to try a layered tip instead of the LePro's i'd been using for the last year or so. So after a few weeks of use i'm wondering if it's OK to use a tip ***** on it or if i should just shape it as needed.

Thoughts, opinions, experience?

IMHO a tip pick increases the chance of delaminating the layers of the tip.

I use a brad scuffer. I roll the tip around the scuffer.

I have never had a problem with this method.
 
I use a tip pick on my Kamui Black Soft...no problems whatsoever. Just don't pick it up or twist, I just stab it straight down into the tip lightly, getting coverage across the face of the tip. I've also used my Willards shaper, with zero problems; but use that sparingly on Kamui Black, you'll grind it away quick!
 
I really liked the Willard shaper - it's cheap, easy to use, and will last forever. I used the dime shaped one for years on my layered tips. About 6 months ago I bought the Last4Ever tip tool sold here on this forum. There's a video on how to use it on his website which is worth viewing. It's the only thing I use now. I highly recommend it.

Yes, you've explained this perfectly. I've seen folks try to twist the TP and this is NOT the correct way to use it. It's all I use, and then very sparingly.

I've got a CueTech Bowtie (actually several, people keep giving them to me) and a Brad scuffer. I mostly use the Brad as it does a wonderful job and after a couple years use it still looks brand new but i'll hold off using a pick......

I have been using a Tippik shadow on my hercules medium hard layered tip for years without any problems.
 
I have been using Willard's dime and nickel shapers for 12 years mostly with layered tips and no issues whatsoever ever. They do wear out and dull eventually. Never tried tip pick. Don't need to.

I have used what is now the Last4Ever tip tool on layered tips for over 10 years and it has always worked fine

I used to use a tip pic but got away from them due to inadvertent damage to my ferrules... I guess I'm easily distracted while using it.
 
i didnt mention that shaping the tip is ok
tip pic can be dangerous
of the shapers and scuffers
i use the last4ever tip device
for me its the best on the market
i have no connection to the product

Willard's dime shaper on my Everest has been working great for a couple of years now.
