Casual foul rules

What are the most commonly played "casual" foul rules for more informal games where resetting balls is impractical/impossible. or when no ref is present etc.

I have played foul but no miss where we depended on the integrity of the opponent. A "reasonable" effort to hit the ball on was expected, but not necessarily a best effort. I have sometimes felt my opponent was not really trying to hit, say, a red near the blue and played it at a speed to leave no free ball and the cue ball on the baulk cushion. I did not voice my suspicions.

I have (and would never) play where touch fouls (clothing, fingers etc) are not called, but you can consider playing like a pool player LOL
