Cataracts

My eye doctor just told me I have the beginnings of cataracts. Has anyone had experience with the operation? After the operation I hear you get 20/20. Does it make it easier to play middle and close range.

I'm probably much older than you and that affects the results. I have been wearing trifocals for several years but had cataract surgery on my right eye about a month ago. My vision in my right eye is between 20/25 & 20/20. I'll have my left eye done Aug 30th. I'm playing without glasses and am seeing progressively better day by day. If you are not wearing glasses now I would say that you will be 20/20 and will see close and medium distances very well. Explain to your doctor that you play pool and the distances you deal with and let him explain what you can expect. Good luck!

I am also very interested in this topic as I was born with Cataracts. Each time I have gone in for my eye exam, I keep hearing that they haven't fully developed and thus I can't have surgery on them. Technically, I am supposed to wear glasses but it seems the only time I ever do is when I drive. I am actually looking forward to having the surgery, hoping it will help my pool game. My license needs to be renewed next year and that would be a good time to have my vision corrected.

Well...

My dad had surgery for his and just in general he said everything was much clearer and brighter....before his surgery, he shot pool without glasses, but he didn't have great vision to do it, it was more that he could locate each ball and since he had been playing for 40 years or so, he could still shoot really well. Since the surgery, he has been able to shoot better because he could see the balls well and see the angles a little better. I don't know that that gives you any help whatsoever, but I thought I would add it!

A friend of mine just had both eyes done. Before the surgery he complained of seeing rings around the balls and basically not being able to see a ball at the far end of the table. Post-surgery he says everything is bright & sharp...his vision is near perfect.

He uttered those famous words, "If I knew it was gonna turn out this good, I woulda done it years ago!"

My dad had both lenses replaced 7 or 8 years ago due to cataracts. He was about 60 at the time, and after it was done he could see clearly without glasses for the first time ever in his memory (his near-sightedness was first diagnosed when he was 6). He said it was an amazing experience. He hasn't had any problems with his vision since, although he has gone back to wearing bifocals, I think just because his range of focus with the artificial lenses is not very broad.

As far as pool, he's only a casual player, but he has a surprising knowledge of english and pattern play considering his lack of practice and poor stroke accuracy, which I think is due to his mathematical mind and the fact that I believe he has a higher IQ than anyone else I know.

Anyway, he shoots better now than I ever remember him playing before, so I think the surgery may have helped his game. Last time we played, he ran 6 balls and out on me in a rack of 8-ball, and he plays maybe twice a year. He didn't make two balls in a row the next game, but I was still pretty surprised to see that runout.

I had the surgery on both eyes years ago. You will be astounded by colours:D

20/20 vision, have to have glasses for close-up stuff like reading small print, threading a needle.

The operation was nothing. Into the operating room at 9, home by 1:30.

The rings around the balls another poster mentioned is caused by a slight misplacement of the lens. I see a lower half halo around street lights looking down from 18 floors up. The misplacement can be corrected by another operation but I haven't bothered.

Back to your original question:
Does it make it easier to play middle and close range?
I can't give an answer because I wasn't playing pool back then.:D

I had cataract surgery and lens implants 4 years ago. My vision was about 20-450. Yeah,450. I'd been wearing contacts and was very close to 20-20 with them. I was having a lot of trouible with halos around lights, especially driving at night. The lens implamts improved my vision to 20-40, so I had to go back to glasses. My night vision is still lously, but I'm 61 years old. I'm going to try some new contac technololgy my Dr. suggested which will allow me to focus from about 24 inlches to around 10 feet. He says he thinks I can use then for farther distances also. Playin pool with glasses is tough, as discused in an earlier thread.
