Cavernous Pockets...

My step dad introduced me to the game of pool during school summer recess in ‘60.
The next year, The Hustler is released. From that moment on, I’ve been a pool addict.

It’s a game where you have total control over what happens next. Neither your opponent,
referee or weather determines your victory or loss. It is all on you. What you decide to do.

It’s a game of skills, finesse, accuracy, judgement and strategy played between two solitary
combatants that is won or lost decided by what either does without being able to interfere.

You just sit, watch and hope your opponent misses and gives you a shot that you can make
and get position to gain control over the table layout. And when that happens, it’s your turn.

What a great game & like saying about Colonel Sam Colt, pool accomplishes the same thing.
Your opponent’s physical size & strength do not decide the outcome of the pool match. You do.

My room has two 9 foot Diamond tables with very tight pockets.
One has 4 1/4 pockets, the other has 4 1/8 inch pockets.
Both are great for one pocket.
Very tough tables for a game of rotation and impossible for 14.1 although I have seen people play both on them.

Buckets are like a 300 yard par four. Golf breeds participation by having them. The talented and the fascinated move up from there. Pool shouldn't be different. IMO ..... Numbers ......

EXACTLY. What % of poolroom goers are serious and want to move up? based on what i see in my local spot its about 20%. The rest are there to have fun, knock back a few and chase/get chased by a potential hook-up. We have 10 very nice GC4's and all are too tight for bangers. Two at 4.25 and the rest at at 4.5(4.75 is better) would be a better mix than what we currently have.

A co worker and me snuck out one day for lunch and pool at a room I had never been in on the east side of Denver.
It had old Diamonds with 5 inch pockets.
At one point I broke and ran 5 racks of 9 ball,it was really boring to play on such big pockets.
Balls went in that should not have on 4 1/2 or so pockets, mainly shots down the rail that touched the rail1/2 way down and still fell.

I've only one 5pack in my life on a big table. I would never classify one as boring. Most places do NOT make their monthly nut off good players.

I had a 5 pack back in my prime playing days (the 80's) on normal size pocket Gold Crowns back in Jersey.
Here's a story about my 2nd worst loss ever,I'm playing a guy even to race to 5 9 ball.
I break and run 4 racks and run the 5th rack down to the 8 and get bad position on the 9 so I play a safe and he banks the 9 in.
I wind up losing the set 5 to 4 ugh, guy I was playing was real good, he once had Hopkins in the US open down about 8 games and dogged his brains out and lost hence his nick name dog biscuit.
Worst loss in my mind was I'm playing Neptune Joe Frady 14.1 and I'm getting 100 to 80.
He breaks and I run 53 and miss then he runs a 100 and out.
I played Mosconi and exhibition game(summer of 1964) and he runs 85 and out on me,I had no chance to win but it was fun.
Just felt like rambling today, bored at work, nothing to do.

Michigan and especially northern Michigan have some incredibly beautiful not so expensive tracts.
Dumanglas just North of lake Charlevoix immediately came to mind for instance.
Inexpensive.
Exhilarating.
Like btal’s enjoy, stylistic good taste’n bankroll afford’m to enjoy.
Some people have never played a course like that for US$50. Some golfers haven’t never even seen a course that nice. One of the things that I enjoy. It doesn’t become so hot. There won’t be any 300yard eagles up there, unless they be up pine trees. Wether you stay off the party or not.
You may not break 80.
You can trust your wing-man Eddie on that score.

When I was in the Marine Corps (1964 to 1969) I took a course "Operations against guerrilla forces" and Sun Tse was a big part of the course.

I got to go to the 1964 World 14.1 tournament at the Commodore hotel in NYC and almost every great player alive was in that one.
Hell the Miz was skinny at that time, well maybe a little chubby.
At one time I was invited to play the Miz an exhibition game but at the last minute it was cancelled,at that time I thought who the hell is Steve Mizerak.

I wish we could just settle on a standard set up for all competitions for each game. It doesn't really matter what the standard is, it is just a pain having to switch, especially when otherwise identical tables can be set up very differently. The game isn't like golf, where every one of tens or hundreds plays against the course. It is a game of player 1 vs player 2. Giving an advantage to a player because his/her local/home setup more closely resembles the competition set up is arbitrary. I shouldn't need 5 tables and a set of shims to be able to practice on conditions similar to the ones I compete on. Being able to precisely replicate conditions is one of the advantages of an indoor game like pool, but we can't stop futzing with it.

Can you imagine if table tennis tables where different sizes and nets different heights at every event? It is absurd.
