I tell my friends:

1-follow through
2-draw
3-left english
4-right english

I will quickly text.

71-8corner

Follow through on the 7 so you can get a shot on the 8 towards the corner pocket. A few seconds to relay info so you have to be fast.

Or maybe not demand others should do what you think they should
I was laboring under the misapprehension that Blue Raider was struggling with some sort of compulsive condition --
("I often check my phone as a nervous habit . . . it's a mental reset of sorts . . . I still want to stop doing it, because I think [it] is disrespectful to the opponent and game. It is really irritating to . . . see your opponent mindlessly scrolling, scrolling, scrolling") and I was offering some friendly advice, albeit in a way too tough form. Next time old BB will be much more solicitous and employ his much kinder, gentler persona -- fuckers been hanging in the pool room too much lately.

I don't think they are watching any videos.

Sometimes I text my friend on what to do in between shots. So some can just be reading messages on how and where to shoot.

We do it in code so its faster.

Think of the head coach calling in plays to the QB.
I didn’t think coaching was allowed in pool (unless playing ‘partners’)? Smacks a bit of the way blackjack cheaters sometimes got beat up & banned at Vegas casinos.

If their attention is on their cell phone, their attention is not on their playing. Should be an advantage for you.
Especially if they don't see you miss and you keep shooting. The key is to have positive body language so as to not draw their attention.

you can be direct and just tell them straight how you feel., That can be done without it being offensive.

If you have their number just call text or email and say something like " its your shot.. please pay attention.." It'll make them laugh the first time around.

I thought we were talking about people on their phone when they are not shooting. If people are stopping shooting to check their phone, that’s a whole different issue.

Oh no.

That is what earbuds are for. We just flat out call them and relay information.

Pool is about social interaction in addition to all else. It is rude to be absorbed in something else.
Lol... Pool "can" be about social interaction. Pool IS about competition. If I'm matched up with someone at the poolhall for anything more then "cheap", the last thing I want to do is find out how their weekend was during the match.

Now to your point, on the rare occasion that I'm out and just playing someone for fun, then sure, it could be considered rude if excessive.

If I'm in any remote form actual competition, as long as my opponent is sitting in the chair and not trying to shark me or causing a delay in the match, I really don't care.

Played 2 different younger players last week, both spent the whole of the matches glued to their phones while I was shooting, is this now the norm?

How slow a shooter are you? If I have to wait a literal minute on every single shot, watching some dude chalk and stand there, not talking to me, then I'm checking out memes.

There is no beauty in watching someone not play pool.

These days for local events....the score is no longer a coin under the rail.....now the score is kept on your phone and updates the bracket real time........so you are kind of forced to have your phone with you during a match.

I get the jist of the OP though........I update the score and turn the screen off.......I want to see what the other guy is doing so I can find and expose any weakness......Can't really do that while looking at a phone......but I wouldn't call being on the phone sharking......I would call it more along the lines of lack of attention span.

If I am distracted by a guy/girl quietly sitting in his chair on the phone.....I have bigger problems than them being on the phone.

I "kinda sorta" agree. Caveat: please read what follows as being "for me" -- it is my personal perspective, and I am not, by any means, advancing that my views, or attitudes, do, or should, apply to anyone else.

Gambling on pool, as opposed to tournament and "social" play, is a horse of a different color. When I enter a tournament or just drop in for an afternoon or evening of pool, I am pursuing diversion, entertainment, etc. Simply hanging out and shooting a game or a hundred provide one of my essential respites.

Gambling on pool presents an entirely different undertaking -- it is work -- it is all about the Benjamins: getting another cat's money out of his pocket and into mine. Such endeavors are complicated by many other factors which are too numerous to list or discuss here. However, winning or losing, I still prefer to have an enjoyable experience, and I prefer to not gamble with self centered, egotistical ("rude") @*#&$!s. There are too many other ways to make a buck without the psychic wear and tear. More than once I have pulled up (winning and losing) because I simply could not fade an obnoxious environment. (This being said, however, there is a special emotional satisfaction to be derived from hanging in and taking the last dollar from such folks. Such instances, however, appeal to, and are also motivated by, one's baser instincts, are tinged with no small amount of sadistic intent, and are not really about money but rather crushing the soul of a deserving idiot.) But I digress . . .

An essential aspect of successful gambling is the ability to keep a game going once one has encountered a favorable position (see also, the concept of keeping folks "coming back for more"). When your opponent is losing significant amounts of money, often his natural instinct is to quit. A successful gambler must be able to allay or overcome such impulses and keep the game alive. At such critical junctures, a real or feigned interest in "how their weekend went" can result in significant dividends. Hustling is often cited as one method of keeping a mark on the line, but I believe that creating and maintaining a friendly and comfortable environment is much more effective -- especially when continuing scores are a possibility.

My mind keeps going to cards. I am not a poker player, but from watching on TV, it sure seems that there is much "socializing" going on around the table. But that's a subject for another day and other correspondents. I have stayed up too late and told too much, but I felt this was too important a matter to allow pass without comment.

I completely agree that it is lame to play on your phone if it slows the game down at all.

My experience has predominantly been guys who like playing one pocket because they can stare at the table for 2 minutes, quiet as a morgue. That's not the life for me

So you are cheating. Good to know
It’s called intel and information. We have devices where we can communicate like the government of decades ago.

Team work, camaraderie and competition is why we enjoy helping others to achieve our goal. The goal is to win.

The player gets the satisfaction of a win and we also get a satisfaction being apart of it.

Offensive coordinators get credit for a quarterbacks accomplishments too.

Quarterbacks are allowed to communicate with the coordinators. Most organized pool leagues and tournaments do not allow coaching during the match... some leagues allow for 1 timeout per rack. If you are allowed to talk to your player as much as you want, then there is no point of having just 1 timeout.

Yea and shows how archaic the rules are when we don’t really need timeouts. We have communication devices.

Pool needs to probably change with tech. The game is much smoother without the timeouts.

The players will play faster too with coaching.

There are people that still use the phone to talk and I’ve seen people have their friends on the other line for hours on end just talking while doing errands or out and about.
