I am wanting a spring loaded center for my metal lathe. #3 Moras. Any one have any ideas?

Concentric makes one...........get your wallet out and dig deep...sometimes you'll find them on the bay but I'd be careful when getting from there.

That may be the Royal brand Dick is referring to........

Wow, Thanks guy, Did I say Wow. What do you guys use. Do you really think is necessary. Has any one bought a blank moors taper and drilled it out to make your own.

I made my own spring loaded center. I use it for aligning taps in the mill or lathe. One end is pointed and the other a cone, to fit the tapered end taps.

Bubs I have to ask. Why do you want a spring loaded center? If you have a good drive center when you bring your tailstock up just put enough presure on it to make it turn. No need for a spring. IMO

I think spring loaded centers designed for the metal lathe will act like non-spring loaded centers when working with wood. Like the one in the link, the movement allowed by the spring is designed to compensate for expansion when the metal workpiece gets hot. It probably takes (guessing) 50 or 100 lbs of force to move the spring. And the spring probably has a very small range of travel (.050in) , again a guess.

So if you were looking for some sort of center to keep light pressure on wood, I don't think a spring loaded metal lathe center would do the job. The shaft wood would deflect before the spring in the center compressed. If you wanted something with lets say 10lbs of force, I doubt you would ever find anything off the shelf from the metal world. You would have to make it yourself.

The royal spring loaded centre #3 mosre is intended for a work piece to 900 lbs. The spring loading on that will be so high as to be not effective when turning a cue.
You would be just as well off with a std live centre or the one like Dick suggests.

To keep things consistent. I have a good live center that has been working fine. My tapershaper has a spring loaded center that I think is very functional. I purchased an extra tapershaper drive center and I use that to chuck up on in the metal lathe, I would also like something similar in my tailstock that is similar to the tapershaper one.
Thanks

I have seen these at rockler woodworking store next to where the pen making equiptment are sold. I frequent the place often. I will look at it more in detail my next stop. Thanks

Either of These?

Let me know if you want prices. :)

This is a Taig lathe spring loaded center for the tailstock. It might work for you.

Just hold it with a 1/2" #3 MORSE taper collet ... no need (or way for that matter) to draw it in as it will always be pushed in.

I usually lock down the tailstock center on my Unique taper/shaper or CueMonster.

I do like to use a live center there and use the brass one from Lee bored out to fit over the existing tailstock center.
If I dont lock the tail stock center down it is spring loaded.

No need to appologise, a collet solves the problem quickly and for just a few dollars .... and my large Morse was intended for those who speils it ronge.
