Chalk etiquette?

Generally it's the people that can't play a lick bring that crap to the table.

I've seen a lot of pros use powder. BUT they also know how to use it and use tiny amounts of it - the table does not look dirty when they are done.

That's not a special tip the shooter is using -- it's his usual Moori.

Two other interesting things about this video.

1. At the end, you can clearly see a cloud of chalk being kicked up from the ball hitting the cushion. And this is apparently on well-maintained carom equipment. Just imagine what is kicked up in an average dirty bar.

2. If the shot that Bob references, you also can see the tip compressing quite significantly. Although I looked at the video several times but could not tell if the tip has a chance to spring back while the CB is still in contact with the tip, I found a different video on Dr. Dave's site that seems to show it springing back while the tip is on the ball.

Back to the original post, I must say I am anal about my table. I have tournament blue Simonis and go so far as to ban regular blue Masters from my table. I use Sky Blue Masters and I've also used the OB chalk (which is also light blue). I do think notwithstanding that I vacuum the table regularly and also wipe it down with a damp rag.

im a safety systems instrumentation mercenary off shore lol....choppas, wata, fishin, neverseize, locktite 454 and swedgelock and box end wrenches and stainless tubing are part of my daily life lol...i play with plc and scada systems too but i'm an air head at heart :)

My table has tan cloth so I use tan chalk. When I step out to a hall with different color cloth I usually use their chalk. I assume pool halls wouldn't like tan chalk on their blue, green or whatever color tables. Am I right about that or doesn't it really matter?

Whether or not the house minds, *I* mind. I have never understood that situation. Tan chalk is very messy on a blue cloth. Blue chalk seems to be fine on blue cloth and green cloth. If you don't have blue or green cloth on your table...there's your mistake to solve. I mean just...why?

One of my teammates used tan chalk and it irritated the hell out of me to constantly have to brush down the table for the next players.

With all due respect, if I came to your house to play pool, I'm either using my blue chalk, or I'm not playing.

But yeah when you're playing on someone else's table that has green or blue cloth, use blue chalk. Good call on that one.

I think one very important rule of thumb ought to be this:

CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF.

If you are one of those extremely annoying types that likes to put the chalk down on the rail chalk side down, and get chalk all over the rail, or you like to use some absurd color for some reason, or you like to put a blob of powder on the shelf near your chair and put your fingers in it, getting it all over everything, table included....or any other of a million inconsiderate habits...just pick up after yourself.

Want to use powder? Put your pile on a napkin. After you put it on your hands, and you want to shake of the excess...bend down and put your hands near the floor before shaking them off. I don't want your powder in my drink, all over my stuff, on my cue that slides fine in my freshly washed clean hands because it is also clean, or on me. First of all if you are using enough powder that you need to shake off the excess, then you are using way too much. When your very first shot involves putting your bridge hand on the table and you leave a hand print in powder, yeah...you're doing it wrong. Many people have a serious problem with powder. See they get used to the rush of the nice smooth feeling, but that only lasts a short time. Soon the powder absorbs dirt and sweat and oil, and becomes gummy. Only more powder will solve the problem. For a short time...Powder addiction is a serious problem in the pool hall. What starts out as a small habit often gets out of control and begins affecting the people around you. There is help available. Most poolhalls have bathrooms, most of which have sinks, most of which have soap. Wash your hands and dry them well. Keep your equipment clean. For the vast majority of people, this works great. It is a habit. Having dry hands is a habit. It requires some effort to ingrain the habit, but once established, it remains pretty consistent. My hands used to be somewhat clammy at times. Those times were back when I used powder because I didn't know any better. By washing my hands every so often with soap, thoroughly, and drying them well, I was able to once and for all kick my powder habit. If you believe you have some wet/clammy/moist hand condition, buy a glove. For everyone else. It will probably help you too. Anyone that has ever complained about a skid, but uses powder...shame on you.

In any case, the idea is...when you are done and there is powder, or chalk, or whatever (how about hole reinforcements from the guy doing drills)...CLEAN THAT SH*T UP!

Rant over.

At the room i usually play at it takes less than an hour to have the palm of my bridge hand turn completely black, I don't think they clean the tables more than twice a year, so i play with whatever color chalk i feel like.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the "if I can't be part of the solution I will be sure to be part of the problem" philosophy? This is a great example of why socialism would never work lol.

Sure no prob if you can find a table with that nice red cloth to use your red chalk on.

This should make it simple:

Blue cloth = Blue chalk
Green cloth = Green chalk
Tan cloth= Tan chalk
Gray cloth = Gray chalk
Black cloth = Black chalk
Red cloth = Red chalk

-Kat,

Even more simple:

Blue or Green cloth: Blue chalk
Any other cloth color: get new cloth.

I wholeheartedly agree with Greyghost.

theres at least one shining example of intelligence left north of Dixie, closest i ever got to something other colored was the light olive i tried with the velocity pro, which under good lighting i had on it i and everyone else liked alot actually....but it was still no tourney blue or green....the blue just looks so fresh....it makes me really happy when i see it.....

red i think might make me throat punch someone if the money and the mix is right lol.....i did play on a table years back....purple felt on the bed, gold and black tiger stripes on rails...in Baton Rouge...some pizza joint....i broke and ran two racks of 8 ball and then broke and ran a rack of 9 for some free dinner with a friend at that spot.......if it was just purple i'd probably have set it on fire....lol

that one spot you took me to in the chinese resturant.....they get a pass....it just fits...because....china is here mr burton lol.

first time i ever played on red though it was really brightly lit.....i think my retinas were bleeding before i was able to pay for time.

i've always wondered if the black light pool balls and such would just give me flash backs or if you can actually play.....i've played in some pretty appalling situations....power goes out...at a bar back in the day.....money game...car headlights or flashlights to run out.... geud times
