Chalk holders

Are these any good or are they a joke? Mention brand names if you can.

I notice that none of the real good players at the local pool hall use them. I guess because there is plenty of good chalk there. Or does it label you as something?

It's Friday night and I a tired of going down to the local beer joint to find six tables and three pieces drilled down to the paper.

I always take my own but out of habit put it on the table when I shoot then it walks off half the time.

In the "good old days", opponents would spit into one of the the table chalks, use the other. So I've always preferred to carry my own. These days, I use a pocket chalker. I'm no youngster, so it save steps around the table. It also allows me to be sure that when I miss, which is too often, that it isn't the chalk's fault. I see no harm, no foul, to using your own private chalk, and doing so might help you.

I did have one of the magnetic chalk holders that clips on your belt but I lost the holder part one night. So now I've gone back to just tucking my piece of chalk into the top of my pocket. I think that comes from my snooker playing days, plus I like to have my chalk at hand all the time. I hate having to wander around the table to grab chalk before a shot!

All part of my pre-shot routine I guess.

I've got'm... never use 'm anymore. I like bringing my own chalk. It only costs about $15 a gross, and that lasts forever.

I used the magnetic type and the clip for the chalk would get lost as it got knocked off when I'd sit down or put a coat on etc. The type that has a stick that goes into the pocket works ok but when I forget it's there it marks up my jacket, car seat and couch at home. So, I finally just did what the big boys do. Bring my own and leave it as a tip for the room owner. :D

Nothing but house chalk for me...If no chalk, I'll run out with center ball

i carry a couple pieces in my case incase where I'm at dosent have anything decent to use,

but magnetic holders are BS just some thing for someone to sell IMO holders, those little cases that go around it and have a hole in the top are the worst-you cant chalk the tip properly, also the chalk on a rope with those rubber things suck, the old tables with the metal holders that swing out are cool looking but a pain to use.

In a perfect world I like 3 pieces on the rail, and one or 2 where i'm sitting, is good.

the snooker players who have it in their vests do it right, but I dont wear a vest, if I did I would have one piece in there,

I chalk the tip 90% of the time before each shot, if i'm just tapping in a ball then I might not.

I like to use the brown chalk and I use it with the Pocket Chalker. It really does become a part of your preshot routine. I feel lost without it. I usually keep a few extra in each case I carry. :) That way I also have them available to sell.;) I usually have a couple of extra Willards and Tip-piks available also.

i like putting the chalk down on the table when i've used it, part of my routine at the table. also i always find getting chalk out of a pocket awkward, plus i always get it all on my fingers.

also, a top snooker player told me that it's actually illegal to put your chalk down on the table. i've never verified this, anybody know if it's true?

i like the pocket chalker on a stick as well, i really like having the chalk on me at all times. i use my own chalk as well (master's grey chalk) because it doesn't stain the cue or my hands. it also doesn't show up on the table as much as tan. the best pocket chalker i found was one called the 'euro chalker' both pooldawgs and seyberts has them. i like it because it has a little snap strap that acts like a cover so chalk doesn't get all over the inside of your case pouch.

Didn't know it's a rule, but every snooker player I know keeps the chalk in the pocket.

I have the same style made out of leather and wood. I've tried quite a few different types of chalk holders and I think this type is by far the best.
I feel lost if I don't have mine.

Pocket chalker all the way...I hate chasing chalk down and doing so disrupts my concentration...

I bought a magnetic clip chalk holder back when I wanted to try some different chalk brands, and now I can't go without one. The weak magnetic clips are horrible, though. The lightest bump sends your chalk across the floor, under the table, even on the table. I make my own clips from old cell phone clips. Cut off any excess material, and attach with super glue one of those 1/8" x 3/8" dia. "super magnets" like those that are used for magnetic employee name badges. You can even dispense with the plastic chalk cup and just glue a washer to the back of the chalk cube. Works well for me. Try it-you may never go back to house chalk.

I bought mine from a guy in Canada that uses the same clip on the back, I like using the IPT chalk and I don't get frayed and dirty pockets anymore. It clicks into place so I know that it won't fall off. The only problem is trying to find a place to clip it to when I wear pants with the shirt out and no pants pocket. :o

I like Karen Corr's little chalk apron she wears. Maybe I can make one.

Seems to me that several people, men and women, were wearing these a few {or more:(} years back.

I tried one a few years back, made by a local. Never got comfortable with it, like someone else already said, picking the chalk up and putting it down is part of my routine. I carry chalk in case the venue's is bad or unavailable.

Actually, I think you mean the longer aprons that were popular a few years back so that your slacks did not get messed up. Rich Geiler still wears his.

No, I am talking about a tiny little apron, just big enough to hold chalk, that Karen wears. I asked her once where she got it and she said someone in Ireland made them, with no other helpful hints than that. Since she always wears black pants, it's hard to find a picture of her wearing it, but this one shows it pretty well. In fact, it looks like she is modeling it just for you! :p

And you can watch how she gets it out and uses it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38V6JTE0tPE

From my experience

and what I have obseved:

Pocket chalkers got popular and a majority of league players have some type of pocket chalker.

I had one for awhile, leather and wood, but the cord broke, glued it, but never was the same.

This is just an observation now: The top tier of players never seem to have a pocket chalker, although I am sure somewhere they might, but around here, the top players don't have them. Don't know why, other than they are just used to chalk on the table, but all tiers of players under them, they are quite common among them.

It would be as rare as a top player having a suitcase style case.

Could it be that league players are forced to deal with worn out bar chalk, while at the upper levels, tournament directors make sure that the chalk is clean and fresh? So, the best players don't have a chalk worry, the rest of us do. I like my pocket chalker, carry a spare. Table chalk where I play is beer soaked, worn through, paper gone...you name it. Ask the barmaid for new chalk & you'd think you'd just asked her to bear your next child...
