There seems to be widespread agreement on two propositions (1) All brands are pretty much the same. (2) Master chalk is equal to or better than other brands, so why spend the extra money?

There are minority opinions which strongly endorse one of the following brands (1) Sang Lee (2) Blue Diamond (3) Buffalo (4) Balabushka

Can anyone rank order these minority opinions & elaborate?

Has anyone observed the chalk preference of Master players like Efren Reyes, Johnny Archer, Buddy Hall, Steve Mizerek etc?

You didn't even include my favorite brand of chalk...crayola
 
I bought a box of Balabushka about a year ago just to have something in my case with the "Balabushka" label. I noticed my miscues became nonexistent. When I would shape my tip it seemed the chalk worked its way deeper into the leather than master. Might just be my imagination but I'm sticking to it. Anybody have some the wanna sell cheap?

There was a test done with a robotic arm using some of the major brands. I know masters and silver cup were included. The test showed that masters would allow the furthest off center hit without a miscue. I do not know the website to correctly reference it. Maybe someone else can put it up that knows.

How does it work on a phenolic break cue? Where did you get it?

How wide spread?

Everyone who can play at all, that I've talked to for the past
30 years prefers Master - some are highly vocal about it.

Just played tonite for the first time with a phenolic tip j/b from ChrisOnline. I don't think there's any difference between the house Masters and my Balabushka on phenolic. I spun some grooves in the tip before using it for the first time, so either chalk worked well. IMO if you don't keep your phenolic tip rough nothing will stick to that material. As far as buying some, I used to get it from americancowboybilliards eBay store. They are sold out forever. That's why I asked if anyone had some for sale cheap.

Observations of the Master players' chalk?

Has anyone observed the brand of chalk being used by Efren, Hall, Archer, et.al?

I'm quite aware that the equipment is no substitute for skill, but its interesting that people on here endlessly debate the relative merits of cues
& tips, but when the issue of chalk comes up there is a tendency to dismiss it.

Even in my limited pool history, I have noticed that I can chalk less frequently as I practice more & get better results than when I first started & chalked religously-even in practice sessions. I even picked up an aluminum Walmart cue recently & performed as well as I did when I first picked up my Universal Smart shaft.

Nevertheless, the chalk issue is interesting. I'm tired of being put down for raising it.

Is anyone aware of some chemical analysis which revealed that the only difference between chalk brands is the label?

I dont think anyone is putting you down for asking. The topic comes up so often , there are seldom any different answers because the wheel doesnt need to be reinvented. Master chalk is number one in sales and is the chalk you are most likely to find in pool rooms and tournaments for a good reason. It is pretty much the best out there, and that is agreed on by most people. Other brands have followers who feel they have a chalk that fits their needs, and that is all good too. Most people rely on Masters. If there is an answer to your question...... that is it.
