This is brand new, early stage, preview of ChalkySticks Map I wanted to share.

It shows you what types of locations we have available all across the world. The marker colors mean:

Green - Pool hall
Blue - Bar with photos
Grey - Bar without photos

I'll be expanding on it more to provide more details on each venue similar to how the app works. This is an early preview showing our fun and easy to use map feature.

It's also shareable so you can send a location to someone else... for example:

Also remember, you can use the actual ChalkySticks app to find locations near you on-the-go without having to pull up this map.


Note: There is a fair amount of API service work going on here for converting addresses -> coordinates, etc... so if we go over a certain threshold, errors might happen. That's why it's still a preview. I have to see what the numbers are specifically, but eventually I'll probably have to start paying for this too.

...but could someone call Ryan's Daughter and tell them to get their drink off the table?

Looks great. Can you adjust the size of the area that you can zoom out to? On a phone it's only letting me zoom out to maybe a ten miles radius. It would be nice to zoom out to a larger area then quickly zoom into areas with markers rather than have to move the map around to find markers kind of blindly.

I added two more levels of zoom to which hopefully will help a bit; let me know.

I'm trying to discourage people from zooming out too far and seeing too much at once. I'm only grabbing about 500 results at a time, I don't want people to see New York with 500 results and nothing in... Pittsburgh let's say. There are definitely places in Pittsburgh, but the hypothetical top 500 were in NY. It would feel misleading.

Also having a ton of markers all over the map can slow down tablets/mobile pretty quick.
 
Your map for SF is inaccurate. None of the three "pool halls" (green markers) are pool halls. They are bars with 2-3 bar tables. You completely missed the only real poolroom in SF...Family Billiards. That's inexcusable. Please correct your map. IMO a pool hall has to have at least 1 or 2 9' tables. Family Billiards is all 9' tables. There are at least half a dozen other real pool halls across the bay. They should be included on your map as well.

I think it needs to the ability to suggest edits to others' listings and more details about table types and conditions as well as a rating system.

Both of these are fairly true. This project started in New York City (my home) and then started expanding by request. Some of the information was submitted by users, a lot of it was automatic, some was by me... but I go through each entry by hand and it takes a long time. There are thousands of entries I still haven't gotten to yet. I'm also splitting up my time between feature updates for Pad, features and content for TV, updates for the apps, new features all together (like this one), my job, etc.

To help out, there are two easy ways:

Submit a new place / update via site: https://www.chalkysticks.com/submit
There's a map that should show your location and points on it. Click an entry + update fields to submit an edit.. or submit something brand new. Here's an example of me doing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piZze17CCbM

Update through the app: https://m.chalkysticks.com/#places/5011
You can use the mobile site (above) or the actual app on your phone. Go to the place you want to update, scroll down and press "UPDATE THIS PLACE". It works similar to the map alternative.


Everything ChalkySticks related is a one-man job so mistakes like this are bound to happen, but I want them corrected. I don't personally know what the best pool hall in Kentucky is, but I hope someone submits it one day.

Oh, I don't! I'm just letting ya'll know everything is a paid-out-of-pocket one-man project... from the design, servers, apps, code, data, reviews, etc. It's not perfect yet, everything is a work in progress.

So I encourage others to help by providing information if they have some because it'll get everything done faster and more accurately.

I appreciate everything people have submitted so far!
 
This project (and eventual product) is a marvelously commendable effort on your part, Matt.

A trivial adjustment (reluctantly mentioned) would be to substitute the word "your" in your sig (which presently reads: Find you felt). Typos hurt my eyes (except for my own not infrequent ones).

As if you haven't amazed enough, yet another outstanding feature to this new addition to the billiards world: Chalky Sticks.

I don't think many realize just how great the potential is here.

This product can deliver for pool, what HBO did for Hollywood back in the early 80's.

What has been created is a 21st century cable network for everything pool. Simple, streamlined, interactive and effective.

Chalky Sticks could partner with other production companies and start something great. I'm imagining a subscription service where videos run on a schedule, and hard to find matches not on you tube (maybe accu stats back catalogue) can be featured.

Then there are the streaming partnerships, where at the touch of an icon, one can switch over to the latest live stream and go from there.

HBO started out just showing movies, and eventually got into sports programming (Wimbledon, inside the NFL) and then original programming (documentaries, series).

But it all started somewhere- an idea that broke ground.

Imagine a few years from now, watching US Open replays, before tuning in to original programming with instructors, or even a round table discussion from the latest BCA expo.
Or maybe even paving the way for a return of TAR .

With what I pay for cable TV in my house for the wife and kids to watch, I'd have no problem chalking on the extra fee for ChalkySticks TV.
This will lead to great things. I can feel it.

Thanks man. I appreciate it. The idea is to bring people together, make pool more accessible and more popular, then eventually everything will start to grow.

How do you get more money in tournaments? Get more players, more viewers, more streamers.

How do you get more players in tournaments? Have more of them. Smaller tournaments, varying skill levels, lesser entry fees. People need to work their way up from $5-10 tournaments up to the $100 tournaments.

I could go on and on.

Anyway. I'll continue working on things. There is an app update that will be released soon that should add TV + Maps to the main app itself. It'll probably be released earlier for Android than iOS; Apple always takes forever to review updates.
