Changing a Moori tip

I've been doing my own tips for 15+ years. I have a tweedens rapid top sander. I use gel super glue. I sand the tip and cut a star into the tip to get more area for the glue to stick the tip on. Stand the tip in the corner for few hrs to make sure the glue dries. Trim the tip with a straight razor and burnish it with some leather.

I got a new cue and it came with a Moori tip and I like the hit. When I read post about changing a Moori tip you should have a professional do it.

So, what advantages does a pro have besides a lathe with installing a Moori tip?
 
i've changed moori tips on my own cues a number of times using just a metal porper shaper to finish the job. never had a problem with tearing of layers. try it yourself, it's no big deal.

Thats all. It can be done a little faster with a lathe. I can do tips by hand better than some folks can with a lathe though. Countless times Ive seen "repairmen" using low grit sandpaper to cut the tip flush with the ferrule...... not the best thing to do.
If you take your time and practice, you can learn what does work and what doesnt. Lots of trial and error.
There has been alot of talk the past week or so about doing tips by hand, and Ive been thinking about putting together a picture tutorial of how to retip without a lathe......

A "picture tutorial" ---- Man, that would be great! I send all my nice cues out for tips, and will continue. But I have about 12 bar cues that I do myself. Sure would like to make them look better.

I roughed it in a curved metal trimmer (the ones with the sandpaper), and finished with a dime shaped willard.

tip repair video

I have been doing my own tips for 15 years. I have a set up that uses very cheap accesories. What would be a fair price for a dvd of the process. i have moved from pittsburgh pa to Cali and still have friends ship me their shafts to replace their tips. I was thinking 15 or 20 dollars for the dvd. If there would be an interest i woud make it and start selling it. Just curious if anone would be interested.

That's a great looking tip job. A pictorial would be fantastic. Good job.:)

The part that is important is getting the tip even with the ferrule without scratching the ferrule. I always scratch em. That is why I only do bar sticks.
