Changing cue weight with age

Has anyone here changed to a lighter cue as their age creeps up? I have a friend and fellow AZ'er who is a STRONG player both in tournaments who at around age 80 has changed from a 19 to 18 oz cue. What are you thoughts on cue weight as we age? Thanks In Advance

I'm still playing with basically the same weight cue as always at 19 1/2 oz I tried one cue that weighted 17 oz and it just felt wrong if that makes sense.

I would suggest that familiarity is important. Also experimentation is valuable to decide what you like. Then settle down and go back to familiarity for as long as possible.

My assumption is that Father Time is cruel and no amount of cue weight changes, hip weights, arm weights, steel toed boots, ear muffs, and finger extenders will counteract the effects of deterioration. Some people are lucky to hold their game late into life and some get it stolen from them earlier and we have little influence on that.

This just took a bummer turn in tone. How do you guys feel about jump cues?

If you haven't played in a long time and want to get back in stroke a little faster, start out with a light cue, maybe 16 or 17 oz. Then work your way back up to 19 or whatever suits you.

interesting question
there are arguments for both lighter, and heavier
I also think that balance is generally at least as important as weight
for instance, you could experiment with different weights
but if your friend would like it more steady, they could try a more forward-weighted cue, etc.
I'm still experimenting myself, but I've been playing with a 14 oz. cue and I really like it
we are all unique, and cues are so customizable, so why not customize them to fit us?

I've had my eye on a jump cue for a brief moment in time but decided against it for me I've been usually rather successful at kicking at the object ball when a safety was played against me.
I don't hold any ill feelings toward anyone who uses one .

Like many others I admit I need to spend more time at the table practicing even if I'm not a fan of drills and rarely ever set them up however if it's a shot I feel I should've made I'll set it up until I have the wanted out come.

I used to like a 20. Good banger, draws ok. Nowadays I pull all the bolts and end up around 18 oz give or take. Way easier to stroke. Quick instead of hard.

Can't argue with what an individual likes but I experimented with cue weights a long time ago. I found that probably the most common cue weights, 19 to 19.5 ounce, were easiest and most comfortable to play with, playing with a standard cue ball. A heavier cue tended to start overpowering touch shots, lighter cues make the player have to do more of the work.

A guess on my part, but I suspect that at that age your friend is playing more of a finesse game than he did in younger years and that can benefit from the lighter cue. Our game and our physical condition both have an impact on our cue weight choice.

I played with the same Huebler at 20.2 oz from the early 90's until 2018. I didn't play the last 14 years and when I got back in it I bought multiple sticks because I wanted to see if I preferred something different. Turns out I prefer 18 18.5, I even have a 15.5oz bar cue I have fun with at home once in a while.

So yes, as I get older I have dropped the weight in my cue by almost 2oz.

The fun of some cues are they offer adjustable weights. The owner can tinker until they are comfortable.
