changing shaft thread insert

Hey people's.

I was just wondering if it's possible to change a shaft's thread insert?
I have been playing with a Lucasi zero flexpoint shaft and picked up a Viking cue with quick release joint. I love the way.the Lucasi shafts play and would like to use them in the.Viking, I know Viking uses a 5/16x18 pin and my Lucasi shafts are the same, but the pin does not fit in. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Tats what I figured but wanted some input. Also I came a across an old thread where some said it's possible to use a standard drill with 7/8 bit (I think) to widen the insert threads a tiny bit to make the Viking quick release pin fit a 5/16x18 insert. Has anyone tried this?

I hate to say this but someone doesn't know there fractions.

The outside diameter of the joint should be some what close to 0.850, 7/8 of a inch is 0.850 , do the math.

Your in over your head already, take it to some one who repairs cues and make dam sure they have a lathe and know how to center the shaft before they drill out the insert.


If you hand drill this you will regret it.

Mike is correct, and even if you were to use the proper size drill bit, its nothing that you want to attempt free hand.

The shaft needs to be chucked up and the drill bit needs to be in the tail stock.

Changing inserts is an easy task for a repair man.

I agree with Terry (Blue Hog rdr) -- Mike (above) is right. Not only are the fractions incorrect (way, w-a-y incorrect), but the Viking quick-release joint is not simply a solid rod that has been threaded. Look very closely at that Viking quick-release pin, and you'll see.

Rather, the joint is what's called an "interference" joint -- meaning, the threads on the rod are 50% over-sized (the peaks of the threads), and 50% undersized (the valleys of the threads extend into the rod itself). So you have half the threads' diameter "peeking" up over the solid rod's diameter, and half of the threads' diameter sunk under the solid rod's diameter. By drilling the hole to accept a standard 5/16x18 threaded pin, you will, in effect, lop-off the tops of the existing threads in the hole. That means only 50% (actually, less) of that 5/16x18 pin will be actually contacting/gripping. That's "jerry-rigging" if I've ever heard of it.

Best thing to do is to have a skilled repairman drill-out the insert with a lathe, and insert a new one, as Mike mentions above. You won't be kicking yourself that way. Sometimes being thrifty -- by attempting to sidestep the proper tools and skill -- is also being stupid.

You could post this in ask the cue maker section and see if there is a cue maker or repairman
close to you that can do the repairs.

Or you could buy your own lathe and do the repairs yourself.
You will also need to brush up on your fractions.

The tricky part is getting the insert centered and getting the outside of the joints to be nice and flush after it is repaired.

The insert should break its bond at 225 degrees and be able to be unscrewed.
and possible to screw another insert into the shaft.
but the insert would still need to be faced and if its not centered then it was all a waste of time..
