Changing Tip Size

How is everyone doing? I tried to do a search on this but the forums wouldn't let me search anything less than 4 letters long, so tip was ignored in my search.

Here is my question... I want to buy this cue that has a 12.6mm shaft, and the tip size is unknown. I assumed that it is a standard 13mm tip. Let's say I want to change the tip size to 12mm to 11mm, is that possible? I also want to see if I can make it into a 12mm shaft as well, how would I go about approaching this? Is it even possible to change the tip size from 13mm to 11mm? What all has to be changed? I would have someone that is professional to do any work that needs to be done, but I just want to know if it is possible to do and what would the process be. Thanks all.

I'm a bit confused by your post, then I noticed you have a cue with a 12.75mm shaft and a 12mm tip on it???? in most cases the shaft where it meets the ferrule, the ferrule, and the tip are all the same size....

if you have and want cues that are say; shaft 12mm and a tip 11mm, I would think your ferrule tapers a mm. I've never seen this, but what do I know??

BTW, you can have any shaft you buy taken down by a cue maker or repair guy....and 13mm tips can be taken down as well (if you have a package of 13mms and what someone to put it on a 12mm shaft, they will cut the overhang off, and voila!!)

you want to buy a cue with a 12.6mm shaft and the tip size is unknown?

that doesn't make any sense. when someone says the shaft is 12.6mm that usually means that that is what the tip size is

if you want the shaft taken down you'll have to send the cue to a cuemaker and he'll slowly take a wood off the shaft until it's the size you want it to be. keep in mind that's really going to effect the way the cue plays. chances are it'll play like a wet noodle unless the shaft is tapered for something like that (and made of really good wood)

If the Shaft is describe to be at 12.6mm, then I would assume that it was measured at the tip end, or else it they couldve measure anywhere along the shaft to get 12.6mm. Unless it was custom ordered directly from the cuemaker, it probably started out at 13mm, or even 13.25 and resized lower.

It is possible, but you'll need the tip to be flush with the ferrule, or else you might end up screwing up the shaft if you have too small of a tip on a thick shaft. If you mean the very tip is 11mm, and the ferrule is 12mm, thats going to be either a tapered tip, or ferrule. You could take your chances by sanding it down by hand or take it to a professional. The professional will put it on a lathe, using a lathe cutting tool to cut the ferrule and tip down to desired diameter then sand down the rest of shaft till match or even modify the taper. Afterwards, he'll higher grit sand paper to close up any opened pores, and use a sealer to smooth it up.
 
you can always go smaller with a solid shaft

As others have noted, the shaft, ferule, and tip are normally taken down in size to all match. As long as you are dealing with a solid shaft you can take it down as small as you like. The new high tech shafts do have limitations and it is best to check with the maker about recommended minimum diameters.

One word of warning, changes in diameter quickly alter the way a shaft and tip plays plus because it is a higher percentage of the remaining material there is a much larger change when going from 12mm to 11.75mm than going from 13mm to 12.75mm. The smaller the shaft and tip gets the more change taking off a little more makes. I have totally ruined the way a shaft played for me by going from 12.75mm to 12.30mm. If at all possible play with a similar shaft the size you think you want yours before making the change. It's an old joke but it is always a lot easier to take wood off than to add it back!

I don't have much knowledge on cue anatomy and didn't know that the shaft size is the same is tip size. That is why it is so confusing. I thought the tip size and shaft size can differ. As for my 12.75mm shaft with 12mm tip, :embarrassed2: I must have measure my shaft at the wrong spot. Thanks

I am trying to buy this huebler sneaky from ebay and it is a 12.6mm shaft and I just want to size it down to a 12-11mm

like shootingarts said that's going to change the way the cue plays. that's a pretty big change 12.6-12mm. chances are it'll play real whippy after you have that done.

i'd bet you'd have better luck having another shaft made for it so you don't ruin the shaft that came with it.

from the posts of yours that i've read, it seems like you're in the early stages of learning the game. you should save your cash and focus on practice. changing equipment, especially in the beginning, can set back your progress.

Thanks for the recommendation evenyone. I was thinking about canceling the bid on the huebler, but the guy hasnt got back to me yet.
