Charlie Williams

Which was the year Jasmin and Busty got 3rd? I was at that one. I enjoyed watching the matches.

Online and in-person is now sometimes mixed up for me. But I remember Siegel's match time was changed too, and he was pissed. He forfeited his match even though he was in the arena right at the start of the "new time". But he was there to unwind because he (originally had) 2 hrs until his next match. So he forfeited. All the times were butchered that year.
I think that was 2008.

One time Jimmy Mataya played in a Charlie Williams Dragon straight pool event in New Jersey, and the roof started flooding/leaking on the tables. Hearing Jimmy tell the story, he had me in stitches.

I think Charlie Williams tried to make something happen with pool, turn a profit, but the way he went about it, it kind of rubbed some folks the wrong way. Nothing wrong with someone trying to do business, though. I applaud him for his ambition.

I remember the UPA Wars on this very forum. I'll just end it there. Glad all of that is behind us.

Yeah, that was the 2006 event and it had to be seen to be believed. It really was THAT funny.

I agree with your assessment that Charlie tried to do something good for pool in the resurrection of a fully sanctioned world 14.1 championship. In the end, his event lost its luster and many soured on how it was handled.

Still, Charlie helped put straight pool back on the map in the US and drew internationally diverse fields in the first five years of this event, and (thank you, Peter) I think we're seeing the same quality of play now at the American 14.1 Championships.
