Checking progress with cue maker. How often?

I don't give completion dates.
Only because I can get very busy with my day job and repairs.
I also do not take deposits.....

I am guilty of having a few cues in the shop that really should have been done before now, but sometimes the new orders go in front of the refinishes too.

I don't mind having texts, emails, Facebook messages at all,
I also will send pictures and update my Facebook page with progress when there is some to show.

That's just my dumb opinion.

Lastly....NEVER pay for a cue in full at the time of the order...it leaves little incentive for the maker to complete in a timely manner, as he already has your money. Be very leery of makers who require the full amount due prior to the build.

Believe me this is excellent advice. Early in my cue buying hobby I ordered a new cue from a very well known cue maker and I paid in full up front. I didn't know what I was doing and it was a big mistake. I got jerked around for months and when I finally got my cue it had two of the worst looking shafts I've ever seen on any kind of cue, custom or production. It took me 4 months longer to get this guy to give me two descent shafts for my cue. Never pay in full up front!

I've had great dealings and good service from a number of cue makers. I'm going to list a few of them who treated me great: Keith Josey, Paul Mottey, James White, Tim Scruggs, Mike Cochran, Laurie Franklin, Mike Capone, Kenny Murrell, Dennis Searing. I didn't get a new cue from Dennis, but he offered to help me out with a special wrap on a cue at a great price and the rest of them were great to deal with on new cues. I know there are many other good cue makers in the business, but this list is for people i've dealt with.

I have a cuemaker that promised delivery in 5 years, and it is now 7 years and still no cue. It hasn't even been started.

He took a 25% deposit, and agreed on price.

Some of the discussion on the cue that he hasn't started, is that the price has gone up and he quoted the price at the time of order and now the price has gone up considerably.

In discussions with other folks that have dealt with this cuemaker this is his standard operation, quote and then jack up the price.

I have mentioned this before and several folks that are not involved comes to the rescue of this cuemaker, heck some folks have even made a video about this cuemaker saying how great he is.......funny they even got a cue for free ahead of people like me who paid for cues....

Maybe because so many new cuemakers are out there that is why there so many jerks out there.

well, It`s two treads on the first page now of cue builders not delivering on their promises, but happily taking peoples money, so the answer to the how often question is: atleast once a month.

The price quoted at the time of order should lock in your price for the completion of the cue. Anything else is complete BS.
