Chef Anton Hustles Penn and Teller

A few years ago I saw him while doing the concrete trade show circuit. Since we exhibit at several shows ourselves I got to see him a couple of times. A large supplier of materials to the industry had built a concrete pool table and he was doing shows on it. I remember being impressed by how well he had researched the company and tailored his act around their products and services. Much more than just somebody doing trick shots.

That is the big difference between someone with talent and someone that is an entertainer.

Take two talented piano players. One may have more talent but the one who can entertain will be more successful such as Liberace.

It's cheesy but every magic act is cheesy to some degree. You can tell he's very good, and I have no idea how the trick was done.

Slight of hand. Her card is never in the deck. If you watch he has it palmed,, then hides it. Right before the balls hit the hat and cards start flying, you can see him putting the tip of the cue against the card, so he can shove it through and give the illusion he speared it.

Yeah, you can see the whole process if you have the ability like we do and go frame by frame knowing what to look for.

Have you ever watched the TV show with the masked magician that exposed all of the tricks?

I down loaded a free magic book on my IPad. All card tricks are based on a few fundamentals and then the story or trick is built around it.

Same with most magic tricks. They are based on a few fundamentals and then are elaborated on using different props, stories and etc.

Trick shots in pool are built on a few things and Anton mentioned Tangent line, and speed are the basics. Get fancy and add props.

The more difficult stuff takes practice.

I attended a dealer school to work as a dealer in a casino. The instructor who was a retired pit boss said that there are more doctored decks of cards sold then regular. Magicians always use a doctored or trick deck.

Here is a very simple trick or gimmick that many have seen. A magician will call or pick someone out of the audience. It could be by tossing out a balloon. Have you ever noticed that the background of the stage is always black?

The magician will ask the person a bunch of questions that the person will answer. He will then say that at the start of the show he wrote down some words on paper and placed them in a "sealed" box. He will stall around while a assistance dressed in black casually walks onto the stage behind him carrying a pedestal table to put the box on. Guess what is on that table? A envelop with piece of paper in it that the assistant wrote the persons answers on.

The magician now places the box on the table. Opens it up and "takes" the envelop out. Hands the envelop it to the person to open and read the folded paper. Amazingly it has the answers on it.

That's the awesome part, even knowing what to look for & slowing things down it's sometimes hard to see the trick being done. It's great seeing someone do their thing when it's obvious they put a lot of time, effort and imagination into their craft....very impressive.
