Some tips to get past it
If youre playing 9 ball, practice 10 ball. 10 ball practice 11 etc.
Play position off the money ball, just like it was any other shot.
If youre practicing a certain shot... Use the money ball as your object ball.

Its just a mental block, you have to tell yourself, that even though its the dreaded money ball.... Its just like any other shot, and deserves the same respect and effort. No less, and no more.

These are great tips.

The second is what really helped me. I often took the shot for granted and just flat out missed. By playing shape off the ball, even if it's a very simple shape, it made me put at least a bit of thought and effort into it and I started dropping them again.

Has anyone actually used a trick where they shoot lots of 9's and 8's,
thinking they will dog that particular ball less because they got used to making it?

I see people recommend that but it sounds like one of those "on paper only" fixes.
I wonder if anyone has actually tried it and improved their moneyball make percentage.

The number on the ball isn't the reason anyone misses, it could be violet and have "37" on it,
but if you care a lot about it and are scared to fail, you can dog it...
even if you shot 500 violet 37-balls the night before.
You can't really fake pressure, you can only put yourself into pressure situations to simulate it.

The only time you can practice handling the pressure of a finals match is when your in the finals match.

Small tournys or small races can help though.

A final match is a final match no matter how small the toruny.

I get a kick out of players that split at the end. They're missing out on most of the fun.

And some of the best practice they could ever get.

I completely agree. The OP's problem is not the number or color of the ball. His problem is the money ball. From my perspective, the only way to get over that problem is to play more games and shoot a sufficient number of game balls that it no longer bothers him. You need to want to win more than you are afraid of losing.
