Chump or Champ for the Money?

I think this poll's numbers are the reverse of reality.
I think people like to think they play better for $$$, but let them bet enough and see if it dont slow them down.
It slowed me down at first, but the ability to bet is perhaps the only thing in pool that came natural to me, I could over come it. The past 2 years I have lost lots more than I have won, I have reasons for that, first I made a few bad games, played when I was tired and have been stressed about losing millions in realestate in the back of my head. But when I dont have those distractions-I play better for the $$$.
And most people I see dog it for the $$$, not $50 practice pool, I talking money. I think their ego's or little head is doing the thinking when they answered this poll. Jack the bet and watch them collapse, I have seen that done so many times, and done it myself. If I cant win playing for $100/game, make'em bet $1000/game and rob them. That wont work on alex, Shane, JA, Bartrum, Scott or any seasoned player. But it works on piles after piles of B players with big ego's or even some stronger players that just are not $$$ players. I know guys who cant bet $200 but can give me the 5 out and rob me for $5/game. Its just how a persons brain is wired IMO. Some can some cant-dosent make them a better or worse person or player. we all do what we can. and if you cant bet thats nothing to be embarassed about, hell I cant break 20MPH how weak is that? so what? For me its not a ego thing, I like to bet high because I like how it makes me feel, it didnt feel too good this past 2 years, but the cold streak will end. I lost more than I won, so what? At least I'm in action.
I have never bet as much as Dip has and dont know if I could-I havent been to the deepest end of the pool yet(but you can bet in time I will), I'd most likely be tight for a while then it would just turn into playing pool with my best effort. Thats what $$$ does to me is it makes me give it my best effort and To be honest thats a lame excuse. I should be able to put that same effort into free pool.

Performance is all about concentration. Under stress, we will find out how much heart you have. If your thinking about something other than the game, you are either not playing for enough or you are playing someone too weak. Either way, this isn't what I mean about playing for the cash. When you are playing for the rent money and the baby formula, now you are playing for the cash.
Some people are PTP'ers and some aren't. I have always felt I needed the extra boost, like Fatboy, to intensify my concentration level. I think to a degree there is some primal connection of self preservation that takes place.
So at $10/game do you just forfeit?
Wanna play some $10/game? Do we really have to play or can you just send me a check?:grin:
I have to agree with you Fatboy , every money player has his comfort zone , I have played guys like you said at 5 bucks a game who will skin you alive at that price but bump the bet to a couple hundred a game they crumble. its all relative to what your comfort zone is.
I know myself I am much the same like you. Though my comfort zone is much lower lol. Playing for free I do not put the same effort or concentration in my game as I do at 50 or 100 dollar games. in 25 years of playing I always felt I am just goofing off when i play for free
i forfited a $3,000 set 3 weeks ago, ask Bobby Cotton, I was down 2-0 going to 5 and walked out. how about that? I aint proud of it, but thats the mood i was in.
How many people are out there playing for the rent money? If that is the case, I guess I'll never have enough heart, because I don't pay rent. But then again I own my house, which is something that most pool players will never have the joy of experiencing.

I forgot to glance at the poll results. Looks like 85% of pool players must be sleeping in the streets.

I think you know I was exaggerating to make the a point. If the amount you might lose is not a significant amount to you, then there isn't any pressure. (i.e. Fatboy cant win a $5 game and his opponents can't handle the heat at $1000). Half the wannabe pro's should hang up their cues and work on a career. They would make more money in the long run and maybe even have a house too.

I am no high roller, won't claim to be. I have family responsibilities, mortgage, car payments etc, etc. My "play" money largely depends upon how profitable my business is and unfortunately that hasn't been so great in the recent past.
That being said, I usually have a small bankroll that I like to put in action when I get the chance. I have put the last dollar in my roll in action many times. I don't feel the heat too much for the cheese, I really don't know why. I don't make a huge salary and I don't have piles of money laying around collecting dust but when I put myself in a set for decent money I usually come out on top. After the first couple of games I just don't think about the money, initially it is in my mind but it goes away pretty quick.
I have taken games that I was not the "favorite" in and played a little over my head and won the cash. Those occasions make me feel a little proud but they knock you pretty good too. Nobody remembers when you beat a guy for 20 a game but when you take off a set for decent money you are reminded of it every time you try to make a game, it is a double edged sword.
When you play good for the money people know it, makes it harder to match up, it is what it is.....

it was a bad day, real bad. I got f'ed out of about 300K and found out about it just before we started the session, I should never have played, it wasnt worth the stress of trying to win back 1% of what I just got boned out of. I never pulled out of a set like that, but I figured it was cheaper than smashing up my cue. we all have bad days. I can promis you that aint gonna happen ever again.

you got good gamble buddy. I know your numbers and responsibilities and your well balanced and not out of control, and aint scared to put some $$$ in the fire. I have ton's of respect for you as a family man, person and action. believe me there are lots of guys who have tons more than you and "get tight for $100/game 1P", and you dont. you have piles of heart pool needs more players like you.
